Personally I find this product works very well and I'm happy to have something naturally derived instead of DEET. I understand why people looking for a natural product would like to know what it contains. The most likely reason for warnings about eye irritation and keeping away from flame is that it contains 45% ETHANOL. Have you ever sprayed vodka or isopropanol in your eye? It would be irritating. And yes, it's flammable. The company probably hasn't paid to test the product on children under 3, so they have to tell you not to apply it to them. And just like coca cola will not give you their formula, this company has their own recipe that they don't disclose for financial reasons. If the information isn't on the label, surely Amazon can't "require it" in the description.

**Questions about ingredients**
The material safety data sheet says it contains 30% oil of lemon eucalyptus (naturally derived) and 45% ethanol. The other ingredients are listed as a "buffer" so probably something to keep the pH at the right level. If you look at the Q&A on the Repel website, many many people have asked about specific ingredients and the company will give a yes or no answer. According to the website, the product does NOT contain: fragrances, petroleum distillates, dyes, formaldehyde, perfluorinated compounds, Bronopol, DMDM hydantoin, BHA, Boric acid, Triclosan, Parabens, PEG, phthalates, urea, Quaternium-15, Propylene glycol, Butylene glycol, sulfates, soy, nuts, milk, eggs, or gluten.

**Here's the problem with buying your own lemon eucalyptus oil.**
Yes, the active ingredient comes directly from lemon eucalyptus citriodora oil. But in nature, the main component of the oil is citronellal and as the oil ages, that citronellal slowly turns into p-menthane-diol (PMD).Read more ›

I bought this last month after reading the July 2010 Consumer Reports (CR) article on insect repellents. Of the ones CR recommended, this oil of lemon eucalyptus based repellent was the only one on par with DEET products in terms of hours of effectiveness. It's interesting to note that the front of the bottle claims it repels mosquitoes up to 6 hours, but the CR tests indicated it was still going strong after 8 hours - equivalent to greater than 15% DEET.

As for the pump design issues mentioned in other reviews, I've had no problems with mine. As it's only a pump spray bottle, you can't hold it upside down to spray your legs because then the straw isn't in the repellent and nothing comes out. Just make sure the bottle is always upright when you're spraying yourself and you won't have any problems.

To sum up, this is a great alternative to DEET, smells a heck of a lot better (like what we think of as citronella), and I'll continue to use it when I walk my dogs.

I live in northern Minnesota, home of 10,000 lakes (there are actually almost 12,000, and they only count the lakes that are 10 acres or larger) where the mosquitoes are small but abundant and vicious. We use plenty of insect repellent throughout the summer, especially when camping or fishing. I've never liked spraying DEET all over my skin and especially hate seeing my grandchildren use such a toxic chemical.

A couple of summers ago, we were visiting a nearby town that sits on Lake Superior and stopped in the local bait shop. My husband wanted to buy some super strong insect repellent, and the owner mentioned that he should try Repel's Lemon Eucalyptus repellent. All of the local fisherman and campers were buying it and said it worked as well as DEET products. Unfortunately the shop was out of it (all bought up!), so the owner directed us to the gas station which also carried it. We bought some and tried it and found it to be very effective at repelling mosquitoes. I bought about 6 bottles online and have given some to friends and family.

Some things to consider:
1. This is a pump spray that is somewhat oily. Although you CAN use it on clothing, there is a risk of ruining your clothing with oil stains. So unless you apply it to your skin BEFORE putting on your clothing, you are only going to be protected on exposed skin. Mosquitoes can still bite through your clothing.
2. You will probably still want to have some regular DEET-based aerosol spray repellant to spray on your clothing. At least the DEET won't be in contact with your skin.
3. Eucalyptus oil has an intense smell, but then so do DEET products.
4. Eucalyptus oil can irritate your eyes, so be prepared to wash your hands after application.

Most of us grew up with DEET and didn't think a whole lot of it. Well, those days are over. DEET is still widely used because it is so darn effective. If you need to keep mosquitoes away you know you can count on DEET. By contrast you've probably been told you could try a particular beauty lotion and found that even if works a little bit, you still get thoroughly worked over and have to deal with the bugs a lot.

It turns out however that nature has some tricks of her own. Now, insect "systems" ... nervous system? neurological? is there a difference? I don't know and it doesn't matter for these purposes ... insect systems are totally disrupted by a couple of very common compounds produced by plants. This is NOT by chance. Plants produce these compounds to protect themselves from being eaten up by insects (turns out they don't like bugs so much either!). These plants include some of the mints, geranium, and this lemon eucalyptus.

Lemon eucalyptus is actually what they make citronella out of. I myself have never had good luck with citronella. The lemon eucalyptus oil works better. But does this stuff work as well as DEET? Absolutely not. If you are going to spend a week in a swamp then you will *not* find adequate relief from this (nor, likely, from the DEET for that matter). However if you're going to grill out back with your kids and your dog running around and you want to be able to get some protection that doesn't have all the health issues but still actually DOES something then this is not a bad bottle to have around. I wish it had mint oils in it too since I've found them to be even more effective.Read more ›
