Holy crap, this thing is amazing! I'm in love with the Blacktop Filter'Trons on this baby. The tone that comes out of my Deluxe Reverb amp is just so crystal clear and beautiful. The neck and bridge pickups have their own distinct personalities and you can easily go from jangly fifties-era rock tones to buttery-smooth loveliness.

This guitar (I got the walnut stain color) is a beauty and has the sound to back her up. You get that "Great Gretsch sound" without that not-so-great Gretsch price.

There was virtually no set-up required out of the box, either. The newer Electromatics all come with pinned bridges instead of floating bridges, so there was no adjustment there; intonation was already spot-on; the frets were even and the action was perfect; there were no buzzing issues from either. The only thing I did was raise the pickup poles on the top two strings. I like more treble in my sound and the pickup poles were pretty low for the B and high E strings. Super simple fix, and now she sounds just how I like her.

I wanted the Japanese Gretsch but my pocket book just isn't that large...so I settled on the Korean made model. It was much more than I expected! It seems to be very well built with polished metal components, great joinery on the wood seams, and the finish is beautiful. I don't think I'm good enough to tell the difference between a more expensive model and this one based on the sound quality. It plays great, sounds great, and looks great. My 4 star rating is only because the pickup nearest the bridge is tall enough that my pick hits it with my playing style. However, that's my problem, not the guitar's. I have a high-end Fender Strat but essentially no longer play it because this guitar has replaced it. Solid body guitars are completely dependent on the amp but this Gretsch sounds nice even without an amp. If you have a chance to play one I would do that prior to buying a Gretsch just to make sure your pick doesn't hit the the pickup.

When I first started playing guitar (many years ago!), you had to spend top dollar and buy American to get anything even halfway decent. But we're at the point now where a mid-range Asian-made guitar will give you 90% of what you'd get from a top of the line American-made Custom Shop Gretsch for 1/10 the price. This is really just a lot of guitar for the money.

In fact, my wife has a limited edition Gibson ES-335 that she paid $3,000 for and she occasionally lets it slip that she likes my Gretsch better. Her Gibson has a nitro finish and better pickups, but this Gretsch is much lighter, has a much better acoustic sound, and it does have a little more of a "twang" when amped from the filter'tron pickups. The "Blacktop" pickups themselves are a big improvement over the "Gretschbuckers" that were in the G5420 series, but they're still not quite to the standard of a regular filter'tron. Still, they are pretty good and a TV Jones or similar replacement is a drop-in fit if you ever wanted to get 5% closer to a G6120 or similar.

The fit and finish on my guitar is top notch. Even the f-holes are bound! I haven't tried to look at the electronics to know how good it all is (it's a little tricky to do that on hollowbody guitars that don't have their electronics mounted to a pickguard), but nothing sounds like anything I'd want or need to replace. In fact, this is the one guitar I own that I literally have done nothing to after several years of ownership. It didn't even need a setup out of the box - the factory setup was perfect.

The one thing I *do* eventually want to change is the bridge.

I bought it for my husband's early xmas present. He opened it and said, "Its more beautiful than the picture." He says it plays very easy. Not alot of pressure is needed to hold the string. He didn't put it down all week end. He takes it along when we visit family and jam together. It has brought much joy and rock n roll to his soul.
