Summary: A great router if you need one now, and are looking to futureproof your setup; and the Cloud services are optional (after the initial setup)

My previous router: DIR-655 for about 5 years.

Review: My last router stopped working after many years of great service. I was in a pickle: do I buy an 'n' router, the standard created over 5 years ago (ancient by computer standards), or do I get the newer (and untested) 'AC' standard for more $$?

What convinced me was the reviews for the EA4500 v2. My thinking was, if this thing is basically the EA4500 with support for the new wireless standard, then why not pay an extra 40$ for the increase in technology? I assumed it would not be faster since I was still using g/n, but as it turns out, this thing smokes my old router (see speeds below).

The big selling point that Linksys tries to push is the 'App' feature. I'll put it to you like this: have you ever wanted to check your home internet status while you were, say, on business in another country? Or did you ever think, 'geeze, i forgot to change the parental settings!' and wanted to up the porn filter at home from your office?

Yeah, me neither.

Routers to me are like the cement foundation of your home: I appreciate they might be the most critical part of the house, but hopefully I'll never have to bother with them. A bad router (or cement job) is one that requires attention after the initial setup. Hopefully the first and last time I looked at my EA6500 router screen was a few days ago when i took it out of the box.

Basically, the programs ('Apps') that are accessed via registering for their Cloud service (free) is an attempt to be more Macintosh, which the kids find trendy these days.

I bought this router impulsively without doing much research, this is something I never do but did for some reason, after realizing my mistake I read some mixed reviews here on amazon and also on Newegg. I was scared I would get it and have it restart a bunch or drop single. So I researched a few other websites for reviews and they all said the same thing. “Update your firmware”! I am an IT professional and I must say this router impressed me. I did a speed test directly connect to my modem (without the router) and got speeds around 130mbs download and 20mbs uploading on average over 10 test. I did the same tests after installing the router and the speeds were the same!

That being said MAKE SURE you update the Firmware to the router. The CD it comes with does this for you so use it! The new firmware updates took care of the issues the router formally had making it one of the leading routers available to you! I run two computer both raid on wow at the same time with no lag issues what so ever! A++

The setup was easy, and the CD walks you through it, the web interface the router use is clean and easy to use!

I hope this review helps you make a decision on to buy or not. It is a great product, but its not the only option there are many great top end routers right now and only you can decide what you want to spend your money on!

EA6500 Version 1.0 Firmware Update is released and now supports Internet Explorer 11. Thank You Linksys Support !!

Original Review from September 26, 2012:
Bought two EA6500s to replace two EA4500s. One for DHCP, one for non-DHCP to extend wireless - yes, could have bought bridge instead of second EAxxxx, but prefer matched hardware for admin purposes. No speed advantage over EA4500, since none of my installed hardware has latest high-speed wireless hardware standard. Second USB is nice, but not critical. Some other feature of near-field single tap to connect seems nice, but appears limited to cell phones with some app (have not tried, easier to just connect than download and install app). Biggest EA6500 problem was latest firmware (1.1.27.141816). Suspect a problem with firmware for case of non-DHCP (192.168.1.2) use, as EA6500 was error-free after factory reset, but displays nuisance pop-up message "! Unexpected Error" after admin login to a non-DHCP configured EA6500 using 192.168.1.2 for router access, after which everything seems somewhat normal. Linksys support was of little help, advised to reset to factory setting (which is old firmware version) after spending nearly 3 hours on phone with them. Risk of buying latest technology... it may have bugs (pretty convinced latest firmware is cause of "! Unexpected Error"). Bottom line, if you are only using one EA6500, you should be fine with this product.

Linksys says

We recently released a firmware to address the issue you described. Go to: http://kb.linksys.com/26633 for step-by-step instructions or feel free to use the router's firmware update function. If you would like personal assistance, please call our support line at (800) 326-7114. Note: if you have auto update turned on, your firmware may already be updated.

This procedure is not necessary for newly purchased products because the router will be automatically updated to the latest firmware upon installation (using the setup CD).

This is an atrocious router. It works fine for a few hours and then drops the connection, I called Cisco/Linksys numerous times, they had me reset the router, set it up manually, then set it up again with the cd and I kept having the same problems. They refused to let me return the router for a refund during the process because I didn't go through all the troubleshooting steps.

They needed me to go into my computer and use unix application to measure my networks MTU.

Finally they told me that although I contacted them within the return window with my problems, it was now too late to refund the router because the 30-day window had expired. I must PAY to ship my router back to them so they can send me a refurbished replacement.

Overall this was a poorly made router that held a weak connection at best. NEVER BUY THIS ROUTER!

Edit:
Luckily I spoke to Amazon and they were super helpful in extending my refund window and allowing me to send it back! Thank you Amazon!!!
