The Kong brand version of this is soooo much better on all counts. My Lab cannot, in all her cleverness, get the treats out of this toy. I've tried different sizes, none would release for her. She finally has given up on this toy altogether and it sits relegated to the bottom of her toy box. A waste of money, in my opinion. Plus, it REALLY stinks -- like strong plastic chemical odor. Yuck

Our dog had the purple squirrel dude dog toy. She often eats her food out of it. She is a picky eater and she seems to enjoy her food better when she has to work for it. So far, she has not tried to chew the toy, so I do not know how it would hold up with a dog that chews it a lot. However, it does seem well made (similar to a Kong toy).

It took me awhile to come up with the right size treats that wouldn't fall out right away. I buy a sausage at the Pet Store and when cut into small squares, it works well. My lab puppy can be amused for quite awhile tossing it around.

We're long time users of the classic kong toys and we and our dog like those a lot. At the vet, our dog got to play instead with a squirrel dude and really loved it, so we got one for home.

It is great - it is made of durable rubber like the kong but instead of the mouth that needs to be stretched to put in a treat, it has four little rubber prongs that move out of the way to insert treats and can be cut back slightly to make a bigger hole. So, with the kong, you need a relatively large treat that stays inside until the dog softens it up by licking or breaks it by chewing or throwing the toy around. When he gets the treat out of the kong it is pretty much all or nothing - once it breaks the whole thing comes out.

With the squirrel dude you can instead fill it will smaller training treats or kibble and the dog tosses it and a treat periodically will come out when it lands just right. It makes it sort of unpredictable for our dog and keeps him interested longer because getting one treat out is just a start, more remain in there. And it makes it easier for us to be able to use the small treats.

We (and he) still like the kong, too, but find this is great to be rotated in and is a better choice when he is, for example, needing to be distracted because he's in a room by himself when a guest afraid of dogs comes over.

This has been my dog's absolute favorite toy for years. He brings it to me every night and begs me to fill it up. I don't use treats like other reviewers have said, but put a bit of peanut butter inside and my dog LOVES it. Squirrel Dude is dishwasher safe, too, so we just run it through the dishwasher when it gets yucky.

My dog has a really strong jaw and tends to destroys toys (he "kills" the squeak in most toys in under 10 minutes), but squirrel dude has lasted him for years. We did eventually buy him a new one after a few years just because he plays with it so much it started to look a bit worn out, but it could have lasted longer.

A lot of reviews have compared this to Kong toys. My dog has the classic Kong toy, too, but it doesn't keep him occupied nearly as long as Squirrel Dude. He gets the treat out of a Kong in under a minute and peanut butter doesn't last much longer. The Kong is just a hollow cylinder inside, so he just chomps the treat and is done with it in a few bites or licks the peanut butter out so easily I might as well just feed it to him off the spoon. It's so fast it's not even a challenge for him. A little peanut butter in Squirrel Dude, though, lasts so much longer. There are little prongs on the end of the Squirrel Dude that make it much more challenging for my dog to get everything out. He loves it and it keeps him occupied for easily a 1/2 hour, which is miraculous.

Many people have commented on the strong rubber smell. I don't recall it having a strong smell when it was new. My dog certainly doesn't mind the smell. My suggestion for anyone bothered by the smell would be to try running it through the dishwasher a few times.

Like I said, this is seriously my dogs favorite toy. Most toys only last him a day, the good ones last a few weeks or a month, but this has lasted years and is still his favorite toy ever.
