I own a Barcus Berry pickup and a Fishman violin pickup, and paid over $100 for each. This Cherub pickup is FAR superior to those! This is the only pickup I've found that gives a round, natural acoustic sound and does not hamper or muffle the tone of your instrument, mainly because it does not attach to the bridge but rather attaches to the F hole of the violin. I use a Fishman preamp with equalizer and my violin actually sounds like a better instrument than it is when I get the fine tuning just right. I am a professional classical violinist and I play weddings and corporate dinner parties each weekend, and now we can turn the volume WAY up and still sound fantastic. I'm buying these Cherub pickups for everyone in our group. The only negative thing I can say is that you must be careful with these to make them last, as the cord from the pickup to the input is much thinner than a 1/4 inch cord. No trouble so far...

This pickup works beautifully. I have tried it multiple violins and will be buying another just to have a spare. The tone and sensitivity are on par with higher end mics that cost upwards of $100.

Installing is extremely easy, but you will have to play with it a little to find the best spot. To install simply open the clip, carefully place the clip inside of your f-hole and clip it onto the belly of the instrument. I've found the best spot to be just between the bridge and the tailpiece on the bass side of your violin. You may have to play with the position to get the best sound though. A couple of points; you should try to make sure the foam pad on the bottom of the mic rests flat on the belly, make sure that the clip isn't resting against the edge of the f-hole, make sure the mic isn't touching the bridge or tailpiece. If you have any of those things happening (particularly on a very resonant instrument) you may induce a bit of a buzz when playing.

This mic plugs directly into any guitar amp, effects pedal or effects box. The cable is thin - but at only 8 feet you shouldn't need thicker. Also the thin cable means it doesn't get in the way while playing. I've had no issues with the cable getting in the way or being too heavy.

The build quality does seem a little lacking, but for less than $10 that's not a real concern. I've experienced no issues with breakage or the cable fraying. I will say though that the top of the mic could use a small lip to make inserting and removing easier. If the manufacturer could add a lip to the back of the mic, it would provide a place to grip and leverage against the bottom clip. While I've not damaged my instrument, I have slapped it a couple times with the mic and the clip arm when removing the pickup.

Honestly, I can't believe the price on this pickup. Even the cheapest of the cheap, which are really not terribly adequate, are no less than four times the cost of this pickup, and a decent pickup is twenty times the cost. This is a decent pickup. The cord is thin, but I count that a blessing because the weight pulling downward on the violin is really not noticeable. Even if the cord doesn't last long - who cares! At this price, I can just buy another one if it breaks (although obviously I hope the quality is decent enough to get some use out of it). For a pickup that gets only occasional use, don't pass this one by.

This works great and solved the problem we had with my wife playing in the church band. I bought her an electric violin but it did not feel the same as her 125 year old violin. nor did it have the sound quality. we tried to mic. it but it was to hard to control. with a 10.00 investment and an old amp problem solved.

My daughter had been wanting an electric violin she could play in her rock band, but I had been looking for a more affordable option. When I saw this pickup listed I was skeptical whether such an inexpensive product would work, but decided to give it a shot. I gave it to her and she immediately tested it out using a standard guitar amp -- and it works great. I also tried it on a cello and it works fine for that instrument as well. At this price, I'm going to order a few more to be able to amplify a whole ensemble, or to have a spare in case of a performance-day mishap.

Really, really, really surprised by the value.
If you are using it to play "clean" through a mixer, plan on using a preamp so you get enough gain to the board for a "fat" sound. Playing through a guitar amp works really well if you kick up the "drive". You can get more than enough signal to use guitar effects if you use a preamp. Very highly recommend it. The Cherub Violin Pickup is a something that you very rarely experience anymore - actually getting MORE value than what you'd expect for the money paid!
Will definitely recommend it to other professionals (though it might give away any edge to those that keep it to themselves...)

This is a fun little pickup. My son is playing the cello, and this pickup makes practice time just a little more interesting. We ran his cello through an effects pedal, and amp, and he's having a blast.

I have only used it a handful of times with my mandolin, but I was surprised by the quality and authenticity of the sound. It would be nice to have a little control, which you could get from some kind of pre-amp, but I haven't had any problems without that. I am also worried about the durability of the cable. I haven't had any problems yet as I have only had it for a couple of months with irregular use. I think it would be better to have a shorter cable with a female quarter inch end that could be attached to the instrument, so that the stress of movement would be on a connecting instrument cable rather than the cable directly attached to the pickup.
Anyway, as it is, I am very happy with my purchase and I think this pickup probably compares positively with pickups that are much more expensive.
