Now that country music has become thoroughly commercialized, Dwight Yoakam's first five albums have regained their revolutionary, frankly shocking edge. Already retro and slightly dangerous when he debuted in 1986, he found success only by resisting the Nashville establishment, much like his hero and mentor, Buck Owens. Today's country-pop drivel could benefit from a booster of Yoakam's Bakersfield ethos.

Yoakam's albums lean heavily on instruments that, by the middle 1980s, had fallen on disfavor in mainstream country music, like twin fiddles, pedal steel, and flat-picked Stratocaster. Couple this with covers of songs by Johnny Horton, Harlan Howard, and Johnny Cash, and he perfected his recipe for fringe music, early alt-country. Yoakam's success despite his rejection of the genre's then-current standards bespeaks audiences' hunger for something authentic and anti-corporate.

Yet Yoakam didn't just record retro nostalgia pieces. He used an older sound to address his generation's profound dissatisfaction with the status quo. Country pioneers like Hank Williams and the Carter Family, or Bakersfield icons like Buck Owens and Merle Haggard, weren't mere feel-good barn dance entertainers. Their music contained profound anger and protest, which Yoakam utilized in a country milieu that had grown genteel, slick, and comfy.

Nashville radio made hits of singles like "Guitars, Cadillacs," or "Little Sister," conventional boisterous country fare, which fairly represent Yoakam's sound. But listeners buying this collection behind those hits will find themselves shocked by the dark, almost wrathful tone of "Johnson's Love" and "Floyd County." It doesn't take long to fall madly in love with Dwight Yoakam, even if you have never heard him before. He is a performer who truly is a genious at his craft and always performs at the top of his game for his fans. I love him madly. His voice, his music, and of course, wow, is he sexy.

I'm loving them now, just as much as I did the first time around! I already have the full set on dvd - everything he's put out - but wanted a spare to have in my vehicle. If 'Second Hand Heart' is your first experience with Mr. Yoakam's music, or only one of very few, then this set is a must-have!

A great collection of classic albums. This is a compact and economical package but the quality is still great. This was perfect for hearing the first five Dwight Yoakam albums in their entirety for cheap!

I really love Dwight Yoakam's songwriting, and singing, as well as how Pete Anderson's guitar playing compliments these great songs. I've had a couple of his "hits" cd's for a long time but now I'm so glad to be enjoying all of the songs from the earlier albums. Really great stuff.
