I got this for my 13-year old son as a Christmas gift. My son has been interested in animation and has been doing stop motion animation for a while. While the learning curve is pretty steep, he loves the software and is already creating short animation clips. It does take a time to learn, and of course, the animation is only as good as the input (artwork), but the tools for animating your art are pretty impressive. Overall, we are pleased with the product and would recommend it to aspiring animators; just be ready to sit down and really study it for awhile to get the most out of it.

I picked this up, as Amazon was selling (not smith micro, but amazon directly via prime) it about 80% less then the publisher. I noticed that a few days later, Amazon no longer had it for sale! so I lucked out on that price I guess. The official list is $299, the publisher (at the time of this writing) was selling it for $144 but Amazon had a sale on their physical copy for $65.

As for me, I'm a digital artist. I don't like doing things twice (drawing on paper, scanning and digitally inking... no way.) I do 3d work 60% of the time using ZBrush, Sketcup and do 2D work the rest with tools like Photoshop, Illustrator, Toon Boom and Flash.

So I got AS Pro v.9. So far I'm pretty mixed, and while it has some amazing advantages over Flash and Toon Boom Studio 7, it has a major problem for me... one in which I just can't get over and I can't believe it's even there.

Pros
Initially I found it very fun.
The Character generator is cool and fun to play with. I could see my kids getting inspired with that.
The Content it comes with is pretty awesome and you can get more from the publisher site.
Bone based animation is pretty solid. Their smart bones I haven't yet played with, but it looks way better then the bones in Toon Boom Studio or Flash.
Onion skinning is pretty solid... it does fading on far out frames, and does multi color to let you know the future frames vs. the past frames.
The ability to import 3D objects is a major win for me, as I do a lot of 3D work. Toon Boom doesn't do that. Flash doesn't do that. So it shines above them on that aspect.

Cons (One Huge Con for me)
The Drawing Tools.

Anime Studio allows users to quickly create characters and animations. Characters can be hand drawn onscreen, imported from paper drawings, or created using the program’s built-in templates. Characters and backgrounds are animated on a timeline, similar to Adobe Flash. Once an animation or short film is created, it can be exported to a number of file formats and then incorporated into other editing applications. Users can even upload their animations directly from Anime Studio to Facebook and YouTube.

There are two versions of Anime Studio: Debut for first-time animators and hobbyists, and the Pro version. Debut has some limitations on length of a project, output size and auto-tracing of images. The Pro version adds more control to animations, the “smart bones” feature to aid in joint movements, full HD export and the ability to import and work with 3D images.

Anime Studio 9 Pro takes the animation software to new levels of functionality to meet the demands of its growing customer base of animation professionals. Previous versions have added physics parameters to control gravity and speed of the animations, 3D image import and camera movements, a character wizard to quickly develop and customize characters from the program’s library, layered Photoshop file import, and built-in functionality to work with Wacom's Bamboo and Intuos graphics tablets.

Version 9 introduces “smart bones” to better control joint movement, editable motion graphs and bezier handles. While the program technically works in 2D space, the ability to put layers into z-space and animate them independently gives it a 2.5D functionality, much the same as Adobe After Effects. For those of you who handle large projects, this version will definitely increase productivity with the inclusion of several features to help clean up your work space and organize your project.

This was an amazing piece of software that will take you to the next level in regards to creating anime. I did also try the Debut version of the software and though it had some of the functionality of the Pro version, this version by far was superior. The program, though a bit complex to learn at the front end, truly takes off once you have mastered the controls, and makes the task of animation much easier than the frame by frame animation of the past.

One of the things that I enjoyed the most on this program was the automatic figure image tracing functionality. In just one click you have the program doing all of the work to develop the vector drawing that you need to move forward.

As I said the manual for this is a bit cumbersome, but there are definite parts that I found to be more helpful than others. All-in-all though it does take some time to master the controls and the skills needed to be successful in this type of program, and I found this out the hard way as I slogged through my initial learning within the program.

If you are like me and have a passion for drawing comics, this is a program that will definitely blow you away!
