I had the opportunity to try and to compare three different internet security suites including McAfee All Access, Kaspersky Internet Security 2013 - 3 Users (KIS) and Norton 360 2013 - 1 User / 3 PC [Download]. Technology websites such as PC Magazine or CNET spend a lot of time testing the effectiveness of internet security suites at finding and disabling malware and viruses and the effectiveness of firewalls at repelling attacks. Therefore these websites are better at reviewing the actual effectiveness of the software than my experience with my own computers. However, the user experience is an important part of the software. What good is a very good internet security package if it slows your computer to a crawl or isnt easy to use? So it is the user experience of the three internet security suites that I am comparing.

All three of the internet security suites allow you to try the software on your own machine before buying and it is probably a good idea to do this before buying so that you can see how the security suite affects your own computer and if you like the interface. Just go to the software manufactures website and click on the download option to get the trial version. Once you decide, you can order the software from Amazon (generally less expensive than purchasing directly) and then enter the product key that comes with your software delivered from Amazon to convert the trial version into a year long license.

As a Mac user, I've not been too concerned with malware since the advent of OS X; as a Windows user, I'm always aware of the possibility of a virus or other malware infection. Last year I used McAfee Anti-virus on one Windows machine and McAfee All Access on a second Windows machine and two Macs.

One of the Macs died during the year and took a Bootcamp installation of Windows XP Pro with it. That still leaves me with two Mac Minis and a VMWare Fusion virtual machine running Windows XP Home on one of them. The previous McAfee installations all expired in December.

For reasons not entirely clear to me, the companies that make this kind of software don't offer any incentive for loyalty. Once the subscription runs out, you have to pay the same prices as someone who never used the product. It makes sense to check out the competition for a better deal. As it happened, I got a chance to try McAfee All Access Individual 2013 at about the same time the previous installations were starting to expire.

When you get McAfee All Access Individual 2013, you do not receive software to install, you receive a product key that lets you download and install the software from McAfee's web site.

I first ran it on one of my Macs (OSX 10.6.8) which had no previous installation. I followed the instructions on the card. Since I already had a McAfee account, I logged into that account and entered the product key. The key was accepted and the site offered to download and install the software on that machine. The page also listed my other machines that had previous versions installed, including my dead MacBook.

I then went to my Mac (OSX 10.7) that had the older version installed. I logged onto the McAfee site.

I have used McAfee in the past, and I have also used Norton products. I like McAfee better because although it might slow the system at times it is "much" quicker than Norton. Now, that being said I have not done any sort of "exact" comparison because I am just a "mom" who wants decent anti-virus software for her home computers, laptops and devices!

What is interesting about this particular McAfee product is there is no CD to install. You simply type in a web address, fill out a quick form with a code and you're off! The box itself only includes a small piece of cardboard with the basic web address info included. The software removed last year's software and installed the new software in less than 10 minutes.

What I didn't like about this particular box...it was slightly misleading if you ask me. The box shows that you can install this on multiple devices (Kindle Fire, laptop, phone, tablet etc). I installed the device on a laptop and went to an identical 2nd laptop and it said, "you have already installed this software"-which I did on a different laptop, but the box states you can install this on multiple devices, I think McAfee meant multiple devices as in a phone and a laptop-not two laptops. This is slightly annoying considering I could install the McAfee software from last year on 3 computers; this made me "assume" I could do the same, when you cannot. This is the reason I am only giving this four stars, but as far as the product itself-a good product that is simple and easy to use!
