This is a review of 3D printed Stainless Steel custom shields available from V-Moda. Curiosity got the best of me and I ordered some of the steel shields for my XS and the fiber shields for my M-100. Here are some random thoughts.
The steel shields are way too nice looking for me. It makes me feel like I won something important.
The box the they come in presents them nicely.
They are relatively painless to install.
The steel shields are heavy, but they add mass to the headphone in a good way. Overall it makes the XS feel even more substantial and, for me at lease, improve the fit by draping even closer to my head. -Honestly though, any change due to weight is forgotten about in roughly 30 minutes.
I recommend these only for those looking at them for cosmetic reasons however.......
I did think that the mass helped reduce resonance in the lower frequencies reducing the "chestiness" that can result form such resonance. Net effect was slightly cleaner and more impact bass. *caveat* that could all be in my head, but the mass does help ear seal and the physics support it.
Overall, they are hard not to love. Both sides have slightly different finishes and they seem to have a nice mature patina right out of the box. I have no regrets. However, $100 is a lot of money. The value for me came in appeasing my curiosity.
I also got fiber shields in black for my M-100s. The fiber material is odd. It's stiff, with an almost papery texture and weight that looks like stone from a distance. Nothing about them makes you think of plastic unless you scrape them (like I did on the inside). Once installed they feel solid. I felt they actually improved the sound stage of all things. However, I eventually decided that I like the aluminum shields that came with the Shadow M-100s more. I may order the steel shields, I really dig the added mass, but we'll see. .

While on the pic it appears to be a set, what I got on the mail was not! The over-ear plates were as shown, but the over-head plates (the small "V" like ones) were somewhat similar, but yet different type style and color!
But that wasn't all! The screws were so tight on the factory standard over-ear plates that the tiny Allen key they provide you with destroyed the the hex heads on some of the screws. I had to literally pry the factory plates off and use pressure pliers to twist the damaged screws out.
In so doing the piece lost its "brand new" look and became unattractive. The screw heads looked bulky and the black coating peeled off some of them, exposing the metal shine... together with the non-matching over-ear/over-head plates they made an overall disparate impression!
After spending a couple of hours on what should not have taken more than 5 minutes to accomplish, I decided to return the whole thing back to Amazon!
