I chose to write a review for this product because I had read several on here that were not too positive. I have played a violin since I was 7 years old yet rarely have I worked on one. I purchased this tool because I wanted to set a sound post in an old refurbished violin. This tool worker exactly as it was intended and I was able to set the post in one delicate motion. Many people discussed having an issue with the tip on being sharp enough to set the post. The key to this as I've found is to press the post into the sharp end parallel to the angled blade. Do not simply try to press the "point" directly into the post. Having the entire length of the "blade" stuck into the sound post worked on the first try. The other end of this tool worked amazingly is fine-tuning the position of the post. I

The tip side is a bad design. it is not possible to hold the sound post without a customization. i had to file the tip thinner and apply a little bit super glue to hold the sound post. The metal is too soft to stay in its shape. you can bend or unbend it with 2 fingers. The only reason I ordered this one was that it was cheapest and prime available so I could get 2 day shipping for an emergency task.

I tried sharpening it, chewing gum - nothing worked. I works to move it around a bit after you set the soundpost with a proper tool. To set, I got a great inexpensive tool with a built in spring that sets the soundpost in seconds. Just google soundpost.

Adjustment side works well, but the setting side (knife tip) was way too dull to grab the sound post. After extensive sharpening, it works. This wasn't a big deal for me, as I use a different tool to set the post, but I wanted to share my experiences. Otherwise, this works quite well (I've used it on both violins and a viola without problem).

The sound post setter seems ok. The edge that is supposed to be sharp, is not. I will have to attempt to sharpen it and hope that does not affect the metal in some way. Haven't used the tool yet, so I can't say if it actually works. Quality of the metal is pretty low, but the price was as well.
