I'm writing this review to correct misinformation in other reviews for this product, as well as to share my experiences. I am a satisfied owner of four of these cameras and am not affiliated with Foscam in any way. All four cameras are installed outdoors and have been working flawlessly for more than a month.

This is a true Power over Ethernet camera. You connect it to an Ethernet cable which is plugged in to a standards-based PoE switch, it powers up just like it's supposed to. That way you don't have to run separate power out to each camera. This is the PoE switch I use with my cameras: TP-LINK TL-SF1008P 10/100Mbps 8-Port PoE Switch, 4 POE ports, IEEE 802.3af, 53W

The lens is not wide-angle, but you can change the lens. In this manner you can get a wide-angle PoE-powered camera, if that's what you need. It would be better if Foscam made their full line PoE-capable, but that's their decision.

The build quality is very good, and the device feels solid. The case is made from aluminium, not plastic. I haven't tried to hose it down, but I'm not concerned about the unit's ability to withstand rain.

This review continues with my experience deploying this camera for home security. I concur with the consensus that the mount that comes with this camera is junk. This mount is essential for mounting the camera rigidly:

The PoE functionality is great. Daytime quality is fairly good (but not good enough to read license plates), and nightime is adequate as well. The IR enables you to see a good 30 feet or so based on my experience.

Once positioned, it provides an acceptable, but not great field of view. It's best for tight locations where you don't need a sweeping view of the area (I believe the angle of view is about 25 degrees). The only problems I've encountered, are occasional flipping of the IR (already mentioned by a few reviewers) in and out, and when viewing the camera remotely (from outside the LAN) it is often necessary to reduce the view resolution to 320x240 in order to keep the image from disappearing. I've never had that problem interestingly, when the camera is viewed in live mode from inside the LAN (perhaps a bandwidth issue?).

Setup was fairly easy. If you don't have a powered ethernet bridge or router, you will need to purchase a PoE injector. Foscam makes a unit just for that purpose.

Fairly good and easy to set up. Expect a SD picture and you won't be disappointed. The motion detection leaves a little to be desired - but can be enhanced by using software (BlueIris).

After using a Foscam FI8910W as a baby cam, I decided to to try this outdoor one despite the negative reviews. I must say that I am pretty satisfied with it. The only con I would say is the mount. However, since I wanted the camera to pretty much point straight down the side of my house, I just installed the mount backwards so that if the joint got loose the weight of the camera would keep it locked straight.

I should note that the picture is misleading because the POE version does not support wireless.

I installed the camera hanging under the eave near the wall. I had to use a 1 1/4 inch drill bit to drill a hole up into the attic. I've seen comments in various places about the size of the hole, but I had to use the same size bit for the hole for the dauha camera I also installed. The hardest part of the installation was running the wire. But I used a 100ft cat6 ethernet cable. I have an 8 port power injector (WS-POE-8-48v60w) I bought from amazon along with some 1 ft ethernet cables to link it to an 8 port switch.

Compared to the dauha (Dahua 3 Megapixel IPC-HDW4300S) I bought, this camera has a much smaller view angle. So it is good for monitoring the area between my house and the neighbors. It doesn't have as high of a resolution either, but it does have a higher refresh rate, and the IR is much brighter. My advice is to think about the location on where you are putting the camera and make sure you put the right camera in the right spot.

Foscam also seems to be supported by a lot of IP Camera apps. I had no trouble getting it to work on IP Cam Viewer or tinyCam Monitor Pro. I got the dauha to work with these apps as well, but I had to set it up as a generic camera and used it's mjpeg url.

I bought mine in March 2013 and haven't had a single issue with it. I wanted PoE for wiring ease and ran a flat Ethernet cable to my PoE switch and configured the camera with no issues.

Maybe I got lucky... but I'd be willing to buy another one for additional coverage.

Mine came with the 6mm lens, however... so it may be a slightly different variation of this model.
