Although I bought this steamer locally rather than on Amazon, I felt it important to share how wonderful it is. This steamer is actually an improvement (because of the see-through lid) over the no-longer-made Wearever steamers I grew up with in Charleston, SC. Apply a light coat of non-stick spray, toss in rice and water in a 1:1 ratio, add a little salt, and perfect, fluffy rice results, while you're busy doing something else. Two cups of raw rice expands to approximately four cups of cooked rice. We also use it to make traditional red rice (see the "Charleston Receipts" cookbook, and our New Years Day hoppin' john. It's great for steaming vegetables too!

Makes perfect non sticky rice. It is also great to use to heat up your left over rice. I owned my first one thirty plus years ago. Because some dishwasher detergents etch the aluminum, I wish there was a stainless version. I personally have owned three now. This particular steamer is not easy to find. I have found it less expensive at a hardware store that sells specialty cookware, but I couldn't get there to get it before Christmas. (This was a gift.)

I had a "Charleston" steamer similar to this years ago and tried to replace it with a "fuzzy logic" electric steamer. It went mad and lost its logic or something because it stopped working very quickly. It was hard to adjust for brown rice or specialty rices, or rice that was just a little old. With this pot just add a little more water and steam a little longer. I was very happy to find one again.

I don't live in Charleston but do live in the Low Country of SC. One tip I haven't seen: Our water reacts with aluminum. It can turn the bottom pot black inside. This does not affect either the pot or the cooked rice, but if you don't like seeing it turn black just add a little cream of tartar to the water.

I"m Fillipino. We eat ALOT of rice. I've been looking for a stove top rice cooker as I dont like having the electric one sitting on my counter. This makes tremendous rice. This method produces rice that is light and fluffy. It uses one cup water per one cup of rice (vs 2 to 1 water to rice ratio) but he intense steam and heat yield perfect rice every time. You do have to make sure you dont fill the bottom well with too little water.
