If you've heard Demetri Martin before, you've heard comedy and weird songs, and sometimes other weird things. Forget that. While it was funny, it was pure crap compared to the comedy gold contained on this album. I knew I'd like it when I decided to buy it, but I never thought I'd like it this much. If you enjoy comedy, you must buy this album.

I'm a fanatic for comedy albums. After playing some of my favorites to death (Norm Macdonald, Harland Williams, Jim Gaffigan, pretty much everything Louis CK and Dave Chappelle have ever done), I went off in search for more. I found some gold, some pewter, and some plain old garbage. Here are the fruits of my labors.

DEMETRI MARTIN --> Standup Comedian
Much like his very obvious influences (Steven Wright and Mitch Hedberg), Martin's jokes come fast and loose and are based mostly on funny comparisons, puns, curious juxtapositions, and goofy over-analyzing/personification of common stuff. He rarely has any extended bits, preferring a rapid, conveyor-belt style of quipping. It serves him well. Most of his jokes work great, but when they don't, his style means the misfire isn't long remembered. Also, since he packs so many lpms (laughs per minute), his sets are almost always worth multiple replays, which is a huge plus for comedy albums. FIVE STARS

KYLE KINANE --> Whiskey Icarus
Like a lot of comedians, Kyle struggles with self-image, self-acceptance, and just plain old living in general. Most comedians try to churn that material into comedy gold, but it very easily can come across as desperate and sad. Not so here. Kyle's rugged delivery, well-spoken self-deprecation, and slippery insight into a misery that most people share makes the whole set seem like you're having a slightly buzzed chat with a philosopher who can't stand pretentiousness. Standup Comedian is all standup, with a little bit of guitar jokes to finish it off.
The material is hilarious, simple, and brilliant. Some of the jokes are funny simply because Demetri knows how to make them funny.
Standup Comedian is an excellent addition to Demetri's comic library thus far.

I will say that this album isn't as funny as "These are Jokes" but it only just misses that mark. Some have complained that there is a bit of toilet humor and that turns then off and I won't deny that as there is a bit about bathrooms and the things that can annoy you in them(think automated stuff). But while the tone of some of the material is slightly different Demetri still has the same great delivery and material and I laughed quite hard. I would say if you liked his last album pick this up you will love it. If you don't like Toilet humor just skip that track and enjoy the rest it is well worth it.

I think Demetri Martin is one of the best comedians out there right now and I was excited to find out he had a new album out, so I bought it immediately. Although I like this one, I liked his first album better. I tend to like jokes involving clever wordplay, and although there is still a lot of that in this recording, there was more "toilet humor" compared to the last one. Nevertheless, I would recommend buying this album. I also recommend his book--it is full of clever, funny material.

Other comedians I like that are similar to Demetri include Mitch Hedburg and sometimes Steven Wright (I like his jokes but I think his voice ruins them).

Demetri Martin is leaving his squeaky-clean image behind, but it hasn't affected his humor at all. Parents of young children will want to wait until bedtime to listen to this one. Very funny, and as I love Demetri Martin and have heard 4-letter words before, I loved this disc.

Not sure how I had missed this full album as long as I did but it stands equally with Martin's other great works despite it's obvious lack of his trademark visual comedy. The jokes shine through however and with Demetris sense of narration and a willing audience you can sense the atmosphere of the show. Don't miss it if your a Demetri Martin fan; also highly recommended to fans of Louis C.K. and Steven Wright or simply those who enjoy the art of word-play in a Sociological context. Enjoi.
