I've been using the MSI GS60 laptop as my traveling editing laptop for the last 3 or 4 months and I was looking for a way to use it as a desktop replacement. After doing a bit of research, I came up with the Startech.com Universal docking station. The unit supports 4k output which seemed like a decent option to use with my 4k Samsung panel.

On the good side, this allows you to connect a bunch of stuff using a single USB 3.0 cable. It also provides a fast charging port and as well as an RJ45 adapter.

On the down side the docking station is limited to 30 hz output in 4k mode. While 30hz is fast enough for video editing and spreadsheets, it's not ideal for gaming. Also, some people have reported problems with the adapter software hanging up. I haven't run into this problem on my MSI GS60, but it's something to look into.

I have been using this docking station for several months and highly recommend it. I have attached 2 monitors (1 HDMI and 1 DVI), Bluetooth mouse and keyboard, Bluetooth external backup drive, and speakers. There has never been any performance or functional issue with the unit. There are additional ports available for more devices - more than I need. I am using it with a Windows 8 laptop. I particularly like that it is universal. I can change the laptop and still use the same docking station unlike others that work well but with a specific machine. It's worth the price for all the features and the no-hassle setup. There are only 2 things that I would change if it were possible - lengthen the USB cable that connects to the laptop (it's less than 3' long) and have speaker ports on the back of the unit instead of the front so the wiring isn't as awkward for the speakers.

Tested using with my Macbook Pro with an associates dual 4k monitors. Images are stunningly clear and the colors are correct, so this would be great for professional design and photography use. The three usb 3.0 ports on this unit are powered. Had to use the cd for the drivers. Manufacturer also offers drivers at their website Startech.com
This station is a good option when you want to go big. Keeps things nice and neat when you don't want to leave your computer at work and don't want to have to attach all the cables every time you get back in.

Used on 2 machines:
- aging 2012 laptop (Geforce GT 650M GPU, i7-3630QM, Win 8.1)
- surface pro 3 (i5 CPU - HD4400 GPU, Win 8.1)

Used with 2 monitors:
- 4k 30hz (via DisplayPort)
- 1080p Samsung TV (via HDMI, with audio routed out to receiver)

It's very convenient on the surface pro 3 since it only has 1 usb slot, it's almost necessary to get a dock for the surface pro 3 if you want to use it as a primary. Sure you can get a Microsoft branded dock designed specifically for the Surface but this is more versatile. Drivers installed automatically, though there was a bit of a wait (not sure if they are downloading it off the internet or if there's a windows update delay or something). Nevertheless, drivers came in the box on CD.

The Surface Pro 3 drives the 4k through the dock fine, though there is a bit of noticeable lag in the mouse (beyond the regular sluggishness of the 30hz monitor). Probably a bit too much to serious mouse work, but fine for reading/viewing. It does 1080p video fine and 4k works but stutters a bit. These performance issues are almost certainly the limitation of the Surface Pro 3 and its HD4400 as other devices don't have the issue.

With dual monitors (both via the dock), the 4k is downgraded to something just a bit above regular 1080p. I believe the product description mentions this but not very clearly. Running with 2-2k though, the lag is not an issue. The Audio gets routed over the HDMI just fine.

With the 2012 laptop, which doesn't support 4k (limitation of the HDMI port, not the GPU), it's nice to have this dock enable that ability, extending its usefulness. There is no lag or stuttering when using or playing back 4k content.Read more ›

I purchased a new laptop to replace my old desktop. I needed a solution to connect dual monitors to the laptop. I purchased the Startech and am glad I did. It works perfectly. It was easy to install and get everything up and running. I really like that this unit has additional USB ports, Gigabit Ethernet, audio input/output and supports HDMI and DVI. I am running one monitor via HDMI and one DVI. The resolution on both monitors looks great! It looks as good as when I was using my desktop. I am very happy with this purchase. By the way, this is the same unit as the Kensington. I believe Startech makes the device and puts the Kensington name on it. The Kensington is $50 more.

This has been a great alternative to the Lenovo docks we were using. They are typically a lower cost and StarTech does a great job with driver support. We have used multiple version without any issues. The one thing that I would recommend is prior to installation go to the StarTech site to get the latest driver because they do frequent updates to fix problems caused by Microsoft updates. (This is a MS Problem not a StarTech problem.)
