There is a major design flaw that results in a very loose grip on the speaker wires with wires pulling out very easily. You can see in the first 2 photos that there is a large gap in the area in the hole where the screw-in base is supposed to grip the wires. After playing around with these, it became clear that the red and black plastic inserts are simply too wide and prevent the screw-in base from screwing in as far as they need to. You can remove the plastic inserts and the screw-in base is able to screw in much farther and eliminate the gap that was there when the plastic inserts were in place. I wound up using these without the plastic inserts in place. I simply put the plastic inserts on the wire itself as shown in the last photo. It works and has good grip on the wire but is very sloppy looking. By the way, I was using 16 gauge speaker wire. Shame on Amazon for selling such a poorly designed product. I don't know how this could pass their "intensive testing" claimed for Amazon Basics products. I would have returned these and purchased a better product if I wasn't so anxious to get my new system up and running.

I installed a bunch of these banana plugs yesterday. I was pleased with the quality of the devices, and particularly pleased that they come with red and black rings that help keep polarity straightened out.

The offer the option of running the cable through the length of the device, clamping at the bottom, or alternatively you can run the wire perpendicular to the device.

I had purchased #12 speaker wire which I thought would be pretty heavy wire. I found that the clamping mechanism on these plugs didn't work well when the wire is run through the length of the plug, It worked better, albeit messily, when the plug is clamped perpendicular to the plug.

They are kind of long.- 1.75" total. The plug portion is .5" so you'll have 1.25" plus the speaker wire itself projecting from your speaker. This was a bit too long for a pair of ceiling-mount outdoor speakers I purchased. The plugs interfered with mounting the speaker to the ceiling at the necessary angle.

For my inside speakers, the plugs worked really well. They were quick and easy to install, and a great value - particularly if you are wiring a full surround sound system! I'll be buying another set!

I knew it was time to replace my old banana plugs the last time I moved my speakers and found bits of rubber back there. The rubber grips that identified red or black and also protected the stripped speaker wire had disintegrated. That should give you an idea of how old my Cerwin-Vega speakers are.

These banana plugs seemed like a good replacement. They are, mostly. If you're new to banana plugs, the plugs have a fat spot that compresses when you insert it, and it expands again when the plug is fully inserted, keeping the plug from falling out. This is wonderful, but with my older speakers that part of the plug doesn't quite fit. That means that slightly less than a quarter inch of the plug is inserted into the speaker, but it's enough to get a good grip. I still get a very good connection and great sound. Other older speakers and systems may not work at all--pin screw plugs might be a better choice.

I really like AmazonBasics packaging, and this packaging is no exception. All the packaging is recyclable and very easy to open and use. The plastic trays have room for fingers, so you don't have to turn the packaging over and probably dump banana plugs everywhere. If you find clamshell packaging as annoying as I do, AmazonBasics is the way to go.

So, they work, they provide a good connection and sound, you can insert the wire into the bottom or side, you can insert one plug into another to connect multiple speakers (if your amp can handle it), and the packaging is easy to use and recyclable. The price seems to be very good by comparison. If I were building a professional studio I'd probably buy high-end plugs, but for my good-quality home system these work well.

Finally, I found some banana plugs that have good quality, that don't break the bank.
I used 14 gauge speaker wire with these and they connect just fine. Some reviewers here made the comment that they had to remove the colored rings in order to get a "snug" connection. I did not - but I did have to be very careful when inserting and "fraying" the wire so that there wound be sufficient copper material in order to screw tightly enough. I would imagine the thicker the gauge, the easier this would be. I'm not sure I would recommend these with anything lighter than 14 gauge, for this reason.
As I said, the plugs are good quality and do the job just fine.

Bought a new Yamaha AV system and needed to upgrade my wiring to use banana plugs to keep the installation simple. After looking around, I decided on these plugs. Here is what I found:

1. As usual, Amazon frustration free packaging is a pleasure to use! The connectors are easy to get at and are held in organized groups of black and red plugs to keep things simple.

2. Also, as usual, instructions are non-existent in the packaging and require you to go to the Amazon web page for instructions on how to use these plugs. The directions are not as clear as one would like and they leave out the following:

A. If you use these plugs by inserting your wire into the ends, you must ensure that you do one of two things. One, ensure that the wire jacket is smaller diameter than the opening so that it turns easily in the hole. The reason is you are going to push the wire into the end and then bend it to go out the side hole. You secure the wire in place by tightening down the top to crimp the wire. If your wire jacket fits into the hole tightly, you will not be able to do this since turning the top to tighten will pull the wire out of the side opening. Two, if your wire jacket fits tightly, then you need to put a small bead of solder on the end of the wire that is larger diameter than the opening so that when you tighten the top it crushes the solder end into the bottom of the hole to hold the wire. You could also bend the wire over slightly if you are using solid core wire. You cannot bend it over to crimp it if you are using stranded wire. You will need to put solder on it.Read more ›
