This motherboard is for a home server that stores recorded HDTV shows, DVD and Blu-ray rips.

I chose the X9SCM-iiF instead of a cheaper consumer motherboard for these reasons:

1. (4) PCI-Express slots support multiple RAID controllers or gigabit network cards
2. dual onboard gigabit ethernet, with teaming support
3. IPMI management port

HDTV shows are 8GB per hour, and a typical Blu-ray rip is about 35GB, so lots of hard drive space is needed. I have two Areca RAID6 controllers, so I wanted a motherboard that would support multiple PCI-Express x8 cards. I plan to add a 10-gigabit ethernet card when prices come down, it's nice to know that this motherboard has plenty of PCI-Express slots.

CPU and memory are not that important for this server, so I went with an Intel G1620 2.7 GHz dual-core and Kingston 2GB ECC 1333MHz memory (part# KVR13E9/2). CPU + memory was only about 80 bucks brand-new.

The IPMI management port is a cool feature, and it works great. You can even do OS installs and Bios upgrades remotely using IPMI. Even if the server crashes, IPMI is still able to reset it. The extra cost of the -F motherboard with IPMI is definitely worth it.

The board has been running for a month now 24/7, and not a hiccup. Overall I am very satisfied with this item, even though the board + ECC memory was a bit expensive compared to consumer motherboards.

I've bought 2 of these boards this year. Stepping up to entry level server architecture is a daunting task and can be costly. These boards fit my price point perfectly. It doesn't come with a driver disk. Drivers can be gotten from SuperMicro's website. I did have an issue with multiple USB devices on them. It turned out to be the SM Bus driver. I had to get an updated chipset package from SuperMicro to resolve the issue. Both boards are solid and have been running over a month straight with no unscheduled restarts. One of them runs Accounting software and a Minecraft Server and the other runs a 24/7 motion detection video surveillance server and a voice server. I have gone through 2 prior consumer-grade motherboard setups for the surveillance server and I could not get them to be stable for more than a couple days at a time. Now when I log in I know its working and that's a good feeling. No more lost sleep for me over these 2 servers. You haven't added it to your cart yet? What are you waiting for?

UPDATE: One year later, both boards are still solid and working well. Highly recommended.
