First, about that packaging mention in the title -- mine came with a minor leak. These are packaged two to a box with only a cardboard collar between them and then Amazon puts the duo into another box for shipping. Somewhere in the process nobody realized the USPS isn't the gentlest group on earth and forgot to tape up or otherwise secure the caps. I now know that soap plus cardboard equals not only a mess but it also makes the postal service a little suspicious of what you're receiving (fortunately I lost just 20% or so of one bottle).

As for the soap, it does better than I thought. It's really (and I do mean really) concentrated and these small containers carry over 50 loads in a 40 ounce bottle. Just a really small cap-full will do the trick and cleaning capabilities seem on par with the rest of the gang. In my front load washer I could see the abundant soapsuds and dirt was no longer on the clothing I had put in earlier. Since there are no artificial dyes or brighteners you might not get that initial brightness "pop" but once I discovered that was mainly hocus-pocus I stopped using those detergents anyway.

One thing to watch for, though. The scent in the bottle is overwhelming if you stick your snout to the opening and take a whiff; however, it is concentrated and the scent on your clothing is not as strong (it's pleasant, actually). In short, keep your nose away from the bottle opening.

Now for the economics. At roughly $13 per bottle and 53 loads per bottle that comes to about 24.5 cents a load. Surprisingly, that's even lower than some other concentrates on a per load basis.

Overall, not a bad choice and it seems this company is on the right track.

And now about that packaging.....

The smell of this laundry soap is undoubtedly fantastic. It leaves a slight cologne smell on your close after washing but the smell is really refreshing. Unfortunately, that is about all it does. Consumer Reports listed 7th Generation 4x's concentrated as number 30 in the High Efficiency category. It was not placed in the conventional category. However, 7th Generation Natural Super-concentrated powder listed number as number 7 in the High Efficiency category and was recommended by Consumer Reports. It was also the most expensive as being reported to be 26 cents per load (not to be confused with the per ounce measurement that Amazon gives you which may or may not very from load measurement.)

If you are only interested in green products, then the 7th Generation Super-concentrated powder is the way to go. Seventh Generation Powder Laundry Concentrated, Free and Clear, 112-Ounce (Packaging May Vary)

When I used this initially, I could tell that my clothes weren't getting as clean as they were previously. I have a small child who spills a lot and some of the clothes would come back with food still on them. The food would be something that was easily removed with soap and water. I also felt as if the clothes may have had an oily residue left on them. I normally wash my sheets once a week but I found that I need to wash more when I switched to this brand.

I am committed to living as green as possible so I will try the powder. I really don't care for powder detergents but I would like my clothes cleaner. I am also curious about the orange lavender scent. I will update when I have used the powder detergent.

I'm a fool for natural products. Sustainability, biodegradability, you name it--that's my thing. But I won't sacrifice performance. I bought this--Free and Clear--with every expectation that it would clean my laundry as well as my usual BioKleen liquid. But I ended up using my BioKleen *with* this stuff in order to get dirty smells.

I wash my workout clothes and towels *every day*. There's no reason for the sleeves of my shirt or my sweat towel to start smelling funky. I figure that with no soap at all and two good rinses and a heated dry, I couldn't do any worse than I did with this Seventh Generation Liquid Laundry soap. Within a week, my shirt and towel started smelling like they hadn't been washed at all. I noticed that my kids' pajamas still had that diaper-leaked-a-bit urine smell. Swimsuits and towels reeked of chlorine from the pool.

This stuff was a total waste of my money. No, I wouldn't recommend the scented versions, either. If you have to perfume your clothes in order for them to smell not-nasty, how clean are they, really?

*****
I am a big fan of Seventh Generation laundry products. I have used their fragranced laundry detergents along with their dryer sheets for years and have always been very pleased. So I was excited to try this new offering.

The bottle is very small for this 4X strength laundry soap, enough to launder 53 loads for each bottle, or 106 loads altogether. It is a USDA Certified BioBased Product with advanced stain fighting features, gentle on skin, effective even in cold water, hypoallergenic, and made without dyes, synthetic fragrances, or optical brighteners. It has a slight scent that is not chemically-smelling at all.

I washed my husband's hospital scrubs (my dirtiest laundry item with blood, pus, betadine and other unknown stains and smells) with these and they came out great. That was the monster test. I washed my other loads and they were terrific too. Why pay for extra water to be shipped with your laundry detergent, not to mention lug a big heavy bottle around with you--especially if you have to go to the laundromat or to a laundry room on another floor?

My package also leaked extensively and both bottles were covered in detergent; the package was also soaked. Seventh Generation will have to figure out a better way of shipping these. Other than that, this is a fantastic product, as to be expected with Seventh Generation.

Highly recommended, even with the packaging problems--I expect those to be only temporary and rectified by the company quickly.
