These are truely great clips. They are large with a wide jaw opening. Unlike other leads that are limited by a rubber boot for opening, these can open beyond 3/4 of an inch to clip to main lugs or bolts. They outside is insulated to the tip for safety leaveing only the inner jaws exposed. The bite is excellent and feels solid on a flat or square surface. These combined features make these clips the best I've ever seen and by far the safest.

Now they are somewhat pricey and very large. So they are not suited to all users nor applications, but for data logging or troubleshooting of equipment or switchgear, these are the ONLY leads I would trust to be left on their own. These will certainly be an investment since you have to buy the leads for them seperately. I'm using Fluke TL224 silicone leads. But any 4mm to 4mm banana leads should work for these.

I am in the I&C business and use my Fluke tools almost daily. After almost 18 years, I lost(it's really gone!) one of my clips that came with my Fluke meter,,, so I bought the latest/greatest AC175 clips, even though they were more expensive at the time. They fit just fine and initially seemed to work just as well, but I found that for continuity checks on the small conductors we sometimes use in the controls world, they did not work as consistently well as the original AC72 clips. Sometimes, you have to squeeze them to get a better clamp on the conductor!

I was a little disappointed with these and even more disappointed to learn as I scrounged the internet, that the AC72 is discontinued. I kept looking and bought some more AC72 clips. Afterward, I compared the two clips side by side, finding that it took more effort to open the clamp of the AC72 than the AC175. Seems the AC72 clamps better.

Overall I prefer the AC72 over the AC175 clips.

Good luck to you all & be safe out there. Dave

The rating probably "should" be 5 stars...
but,
I'm still bitter about the price.

They "are" well made.
The look and feel is there.
The plastic is top notch.
The gator teeth are good...

Just can't shake the feeling that I'm paying more for the logo than the clips.

Even though there are threads present, the AC175's indeed work with the standard Fluke unthreaded test leads (the TL75's commonly provided with Fluke multimeters such as the 1xx series). If you look into the threaded ends of the alligator clips, the "slide clamps" that securely hold unthreaded test leads are found beyond the threads, with the test leads plenty long enough to reach them. Fluke explicitly states that these work with the TL75's, as they in fact do.

I've bought alligator clips in the past and looked at several brands/types of alligator clips and while they usually do the job, more often than not, that is just it. They do the job, but there really isn't much to say about them. The Fluke AC285 are polar opposites to say the least.

Not only are they comfortable to use, even after extended time, but the teeth on these clips are truly impressive in their own right. Solid steel that is nickel plated, that is not only very strong, they also provide a ultra tight grip as well. In addition, they can grip anything from fine gauge to even 20mm nut. None of the alligator clips I've owned or looked at could very easily grab fine wire, let alone a 20mm nut.

However, not only are they nice to use, they are also safe as well. Not only do they have CAT III protection (600 volts), but they also have CAT IV protection as well (which is 1000 volts). I've seen CAT III protection on alligator clips, but to have CAT IV protection is just plain amazing and very much impressive. But the protection does not end there, they are also double insulated, but they also conform to the safety standard IEC 61010-031. Although I have some insulated alligator clips, none of them have the amount of safety precautions as this alligator has.

Now although this alligator clips won't fit a stand banana jack Multimeter, they do work with Fluke Test leads TL224 and even TL222. But if you have a multimeter that isn't from Fluke, there is a good chance the test leads (TL224/TL222) will work with just about any multimeter. On a personal note, just to test that theory, I tried these Fluke AC285 Suregrip Alligator clips on my Klein Tools MM200 Multimeter and as expected, these alligator clips do no fit.

I was expecting a slightly larger metallic teeth on this plunger type test leads. It is sturdy with a good strong spring action to it. It does open quite wide. I would have given it five stars if the metallic teeth were slightly larger for a better grip.Overall, The quality is very good. Up to Fluke standards and pricing. I feel $30.00 dollars to be a little over priced for test leads heads, tho.

I am a heavy multimeter user. I teach electricity and electronics classes and now that I have been using these little clips for a while, I can't live without them. They are high quality. They just slide onto the ends of my existing leads, and they can be removed just as easily when I want the regular leads back. I was worried that they would loosen up over time and start falling off of the ends of the leads, but after 1 1/2 years of using them, they grip just as well as the day I bought them. I highly recommend them!
