I bought this for the salt. I loved the color and after using it, I loved the taste. It comes from Olde Thompson..historically one of the really nice families in business. And the price is not bad either, especially if you buy the two-pack. The question that seems to bother me the most, is why? Why would Olde Thompson package this nice Himalayan Pink Salt in a throw-away plastic grinder. Then I grabbed my latest bottle of Malabar Black peppercorns Olde Thompson Malabar Pepper, 4.9-Ounce Grinders (Pack of 2)and discovered that they too were in the same throw-away plastic grinder. It is not that these throw-away type products are necessarily bad. I guess they have a time and a place. For some reason I just can not get over Olde Thompson packaging something like this. I have always thought that folks who purchased coarse or rock style salts had a 'real' grinder for them. And, in addition, that packaging had to really add a significant dollar amount to the retail price. Oh well, I guess they know their market a lot better than I...!!!

Anyway, other than the wasteful packaging (which is a real shame..), the product does not disappoint. It flows nicely through the grinder and tastes very clean. I have a real soft spot for nice salts, and this one is a good one. The top grinder is nice because it sits on its base and does not leave a salt trail behind whenever it is moved. The one thing that bothers me (other than the packaging touched on earlier..) is that there is no apparent way to remove the top..???? I like to have the option of using some of this 'rock' style salt as a garnish or to add a touch of flair to a plating. So far I have not been able to do so.

These larger capacity grinders of the Himalayan salt are better deals than most I've come across. At 10 ounces, each grinder holds two to two and a half times the salt of others I have purchased for about the same price. In fact, there are 283 quarter teaspoons (one gram) of salt per container.

What I love is these grinders have an adjustment mechanism that turned clockwise will give you a finer grind. For coarser grinds simply turn it in the other direction. I have uploaded a customer-supplied image at the top of this page that shows this adjusting mechanism.

Note: the grinders themselves are disposable. Once it's empty you simple throw it away, which is a shame because they work well. Unlike some refillable grinders I have owned these have a smooth action and do not get stuck. The large cap keeps moisture out of the salt when it is stored.

The salt itself does have a different flavor and one that I personally like. The flavor may be due to the iron oxide, which also colors the rocks pink. The actual sodium chloride content - the salt itself - comprises 95 percent of the product. Do be aware that there are no magical properties to this salt.

If you are on a restricted sodium diet this is as bad for you as sea salt or Kosher salt if used in excess. Each quarter of a teaspoon serving - one gram - contains 416mg of sodium. I have included a customer-supplied image at the top of this page showing the actual nutrition label that is affixed to the grinders.

If you compare prices of pre-loaded grinders of this salt you will quickly discover that this one is a bargain. I love mine for the convenience, but I also purchase additional salt in bulk for salt cellars and preserving.

This is not table salt or sea salt. Those two salts have been mined of their mineral content and are left with only sodium and chloride. Sometimes iodine is added but it's a "dead" iodine. Himalayan salt has been untouched and the complete mineral content has been left intact. Therefore, you now have the complete 86 trace minerals in this salt that your body needs and craves. including all the electrolyte minerals. Do your research first. Read about the incredible properties of Himalayan Salt and Celtic Salt. If you have high blood pressure, it will lower it; if you have low blood pressure, it will raise it. Water retention? Kidney stones? Diabetes? True salt can equalize the body. You can't eat too much, because of the perfect mineral content and balance, the body flushes out any excess. Nature produces a perfect product every time. It is man that ruins it.

The salt itself gives food a bit of a distinctive flavor but the grinder is a piece of junk. After about three weeks worth of daily use the grinder started to fail and wouldn't grind. Finally out of frustration I just took the top off and started putting the large chunks into boiling water therefore limiting it's use (I couldn't put it directly on food). And then today I forgot that I took the top off the base and dumped about half of the bottle into the water effectively wasting it all.
