I have posted this twice because I didn't feel like writing a review because I blindly bought two buckets of this stuff, I hope this review helps. : )
O.k. I have only tried one packet (Beef and Mac) out of this bucket, but I am immediately impressed. This is my wife's account, so I am posting under her . I am in the military and in the Special Operations community. I purchased this food for emergencies obviously, to paint an accurate picture my wife and I make 90% of what our Family eats to include home made bread, biscuits, jelly's and jams etc. I am very picky on what I eat, and what my family puts in their bodies. Ingredient wise there are a few ingredients I wish were not in the packet(preservatives), but it is emergency food with that being said.
I decided to make the packet exactly as directed on the back of the package with out adding anything at all to it. No extra spices or seasoning at all ( cholula or tabasco would have made it amazing) it rivals the hamburger helper dishes you buy at the store, the beef taste fine, it has a very slight off taste, but over all for a packaged meal I will loose no sleep in giving it a 10+ it is extremely light weight which makes for an easily portable meal that keeps you light on your feet. Your kids could pack 10 of these in their go bags and it will only add about 1lb in weight to there pack. Each pouch has 2-2.5 servings in it totaling about 800calories, and they last for up to 25years ( awesome).
The meal was very filling I think the one bag of 2.5 servings would have satisfied me and filled my 3 girls up,Their ages range from 4-8 years old. Keep in mind that the one cup serving size is what we should all be eating not what we are used to ( the american habit of over indulging on everything).

The Mountain House foods are a cut above the other brands; real food and meals compared to mush or cup a soup for the most part with the other brands. The other brands are rice with a few veggies, or mac n cheese for their big stick to your ribs meal! The other brands don't have enough calories when they have a bucket, usually around 1000 which is great if you want to go on a starvation diet but if you are a adult you should figure 2 buckets per adult and you are going to get sick of the same bland bland bland food. Mountain House foods have a wider assortment of entrees, and one of my favorites is the blueberry granola w/milk which you can eat plain as a snack. They have desserts like cheese cake! Mountain House has lasagna with real meat sauce and if possible the only complaint too much cheese? If someone really does like mac n cheese Mountain House has some too, but it's more of a side. You can buy #10 cans of meat by themselves too as well as vegetables and fruit so you can make your own meals. I ordered beef stew and chicken alfredo as some of our family favorites. I have dried eggs in my cupboard just in case I am baking and I don't have eggs on hand, you can't tell the difference at all. I have dried milk in my cupboard but I buy it by superpail... you can use it to thicken alfredo sauces without calories.

A good comparison between Mountain House and Honeyville or Wise would be going to a good sit down restaurant (MH) and a restaurant (HV,W) where all the meat is precooked and just rewarmed where they had the pink slime controversy. I am a cook, bake my own bread so I don't eat out very often at all and couldn't think of buying Wise or Honeyville. My husband would be very hungry and have to eat about 3 servings at a time. I bought Mountain House with him in mind.... Real Food! Very satisfying. Just use HOT water

When I go offroading/tent camping, I usually bring an ice chest with real food, but one of my friends always brings Mountain House freeze dried food and gives very high ratings for it. So I bought the "classic assortment bucket" just to try out. The meals taste as good as Hamburger Helper with fresh ground beef. The seasoning is spot on and the sodium content fits with the typical American diet which tastes good and helps you retain water. This is good in a survival situation. It's bad for people with heart failure, but it's really good for healthy people that are starving and have limited water supplies. Skeptical that I know what I'm talking about? I'm a molecular biologist and a board certified sub-specialist medical doctor trained at University of Washington, UC Irvine and Stanford (you can Google me). The "per serving" numbers are rubbish. It says each packet is ~2.5 servings of food at ~220 calories each. Think of it this way: 3 square meals means eating 1 bag for breakfast lunch and dinner each day, so the 12 packets in this bucket is 4 days worth of food. That will provide you with 1700 calories per day, of which 19.2% comes from protein, 25.6% from fat and 55.2% from carbohydrate. This is also pretty much ideal in a survival situation. With that said, if you are the typical mild to moderately overweight American, I would recommend eating half of that amount each day, "just in case," so that you don't starve after eating all your rations. The bucket has 6,800 calories total of which 1,795 are from fat. In my opinion, this is a HIGHLY recommended product.
