The nearest most of will get to see these signs of play are from an airliner when it is taking off or landing and then annoyingly it is only for a few seconds. Alex MacLean has the luxury of diverting his Cessna while on an assignment to take a closer look at something that has caught his eye. He probably spends a lot of time getting diverted because from the air a whole lot of human activity is just plain intriguing not to say colorful as well.

Page fifty-nine shows the MGM Studio amusement park in Orlando, a kaleidoscope of shapes and color. Pure eye candy but Alex is the only one who can see it like this. Fun parks, either roller coasters, water slides (see the book's cover above) or theme oriented just look super from above. Hotel swimming pools get a good showing because of their irregular shapes and surrounding landscaping. Near the back of the book are several winter shots including one of ice fishing holes and tracks that looks remarkably like one of those Spirograph pictures.

Most play or leisure-time activity (even army cadets on parade at West Point) is covered in the eighty-one photos. The book is well printed and the straightforward design gives maximum impact to the images. A few of them appeared in Designs on the Land: Exploring America From the Air MacLean's remarkable book of America from the air with 420 amazing color photos.

But I've published numerous MacLean pictures from artnet's Artist Works Catalogues at an article at OpEdNews, just yesterday. The title of the article is "Alex S. MacLean, Possibly the Finest Low-Altitude Photographer in the World."

Someone should send this book to the radical sports-writer Dave Zirin.
