I purchased two of these flashes when I was switching from a Canon system to a Sony system (I fell in love with the Sony A7 camera). While I was shooting with the Canon system, with Canon flashes, I never had a problem. However the same can not be said for the HVL-F60M flashes. I purchased them in Dec. and used them for some light family photography over the holidays. This past weekend, I shot my first event with them. I was shooting the event guests in front of a backdrop, averaging about one shot per minute. After about 35 minutes of shooting, the flash shut down and reported it was overheating. The flash unit was cool to the touch. I stopped shooting, changed flashes and put the second HVL-F60M on the camera. I resumed shooting and after about 20 minutes, the same overheating shutdown issue occurred on the second flash. As a professional photographer this is totally unacceptable. In doing research since, there are quite a few reports of this problem since the flash was released.

I called Sony support, they opened a ticket, said they would have to escalate my issue and they would call me back within 24 hours. It has now been 2 days and I am still waiting for that return call.

This is one solid flash - it is built well, is very powerful, and has all the bells and whistles of a top line flash.

However, coming from the fabulous Canon EX580 II, I rely heavily on bounced light, often at full power.

Unfortunately, the F60M didn't care for that style of shooting. At a recent event, it shutdown at the single most inopportune moment, causing me to scramble to try to manage without its help.

Rather than trying to change my style to conform to my tool, I chose to find a tool that could adjust to my style.

Since then, I've discovered the Metz Mecablitz 58 AF-2, which handles my demands quite well. (See my review of that product for details.)

To be fair to the HVLF60M - a number of users find they can live comfortably within these constraints, and some even consider this to be a key design/safety feature.

As this is not a cheap unit, I'd strongly recommend that you try this out for yourself to determine whether this flash is a good fit for you.

Happy Photography!

How dumb was I for buying this flash unit without reading user reviews first--NEVER AGAIN! Bought one unit through Amazon and first time I used the flash on a real estate assignment, I had fired the flash 40 times over a 10 minute period and the unit shut down due to overheating. (There is a warning about not firing the flash for 20 times in rapid succession because of possible overheating.--Not sure how that fits with a $500+ strobe that bills itself as a professional multiple-fire-high-speed-stroboscopic unit) but 40 TTL flashes in 10 minutes is hardly rapid fire.
Anyway, I sent it back to Sony and they sent me a new unit... SAME PROBLEM ONLY WORSE. Overheated much sooner, except the unit doesn't even feel warm to the touch.
DESIGN FLAW-NOT a Professional TOOL...just priced like one.

I don't want to be mean but IF YOU ARE A PRO or at least know what the heck you're doing when it comes to supposedly high quality gear - like this Sony flash is masquerading as, you will be shocked to know it is A PIECE OF JUNK!!!!

I'm a pro who has decided to jump into Mirrorless Hybrid Photography and was thrilled to get my hand on the Sony a7R. I didn't realized that they would sell an overpriced flash unit that barely a hobbyist would find UTTERLY UNDERWHELMING.

I am so shocked that $550 got me a flash that literally after 5 shots shut down. I shot some random people within a 25 minute period with flash at an event then during the most critical portion, the presentation of a recognition award, I took 5 shots with flash of the presenter and award recipient and it stopped working. WHAT A JOKE!!!! My first job and I could barely use it.

DO NOT BUY this flash if you are a semi or pro because it will not perform and leave you in the lurch!

OMG, I am so disappointed Sony would sell this crap!

I own a pair of these. I attempted to use them at a wedding reception. While the bounce feature using the supplied diffuser is nice (metal contacts on the diffuser communicate with the flash so it is aware that the light is being bounced) and the results are good it all means nothing if the flash cannot be used. The flash overheats after a ridiculously low number of shots.

In 4 years of using the Canon 580exII flash, I never once experienced an overheating shutdown (not after dozens of weddings, studio shoots, events and more). In the three times I used this flashes, I've experienced a shutdown over 20 times. I couldn't make it through the vows of a wedding without swapping flashes and missing important shots. I couldn't cover a cake cutting. I took out the batteries - they were not even warm.

Unless you are buying this flash for occasional portraits (and don't intend to take many shots), this flash cannot be relied upon or trusted. Sometimes I wonder if Sony tests their gear.

The plastic foot is also worrisome, I do not understand why it's not metal.
