Olympus has a versatile (if expensive) ring flash (RF-11) which it introduced a number of years ago with the Four-Thirds system. They recently introduced the 60 mm macro lens for the Micro Four-Thirds system. The FR-2 adapter allows the ring flash unit to be used with this lens. The FR-2 is a screw-on adapter which mounts on the front of the lens. The RF-11 was designed to attach to some of the original Four-Thirds lenses in the same manner as the lens hood of those lenses (the 14-54mm zoom Mark I and the 50-200mm zoom Mark I). Olympus also had an FR-1 adapter to allow the RF-11 to be used with the 50mm macro Four-Thirds lens.

Unfortunately, this limited the number of lenses which could use their excellent ring flash. Now with the FR-2 the adapter can be used with any lens using a 46mm filter size. This means that the ring flash may be used with other lenses via appropriate step-up or step-down adapters. I have successfully done that. The ring flash itself is powered and controlled by the separate flash controller, so it does not place much weight on the front of the lens.

My one wish is that Olympus would have allowed the use of different size filter adapters, as there is mechanical room to allow attachment at larger than 46mm. Some legacy lenses use require using step-down rings and one wishes to avoid any possible vignetting. Since these are usually macro lenses and I normally do not use these at maximum aperture, it has not proven to be a problem in my own use. I mention it as others may use the lenses in a different manner and might encounter vignetting.

It's held together by three tiny screws, two of which either fell out or were not installed on my unit, so that it broke into two parts the first time I used it in the field. I lost the use of my twinlight flash on a weeklong field trip, which was very inconvenient. If you get one, check that it's put together correctly and the screws are securely fastened (may need a jeweler's screwdriver); if correctly assembled, it works fine.
