People have different sized hands and ways of holding cameras. I have medium sized hands and skinny fingers, and I prefer portrait orientation, so this grip was a must as soon as I got a D600. The two different battery modules (AA, and lithium rechargeable) are excellent and rugged and seem not likely to break soon, and the grippy rubber is a joy to hold. The 1/4-20 screw actuated by a front and rear operated wheel is well recessed, and strongly and firmly attaches the camera to the grip without play. Its weight is perfect for balancing the camera in vertical mode. I like the button locations and the handy recess to store the contact cover under the grip. The only thing missing is a strap lug on the button end for those of us who want the camera to hang in portrait mode - like a Pentax 67 might.

I put camera and grip on a tripod and don't see any excess play. The option of being able to power the camera with AAs in case and not have to worry about bringing a charger along is a huge plus for me. I would definitely buy this again - it makes the smallish D600 just right in the heft department, and brings it all to hand so securely that I never feel I might drop the camera.

I have grips on all my Nikon cameras for no other reason than improved handling in my large hands with larger lenses. After having tried aftermarket grips in the past I didn't waste my time or money with the D600, I purchased the Nikon grip. I purchased my D600 from a camera dealer and got a much better price on the grip than what it's being sold for here. And yes, the dealer sold the D600 to me for the same price as amazon and with the same return privileges. The dealer also went over the camera and checked the sensor for me to insure it was clean.

The grip absolutely deserves four stars for feel and performance, but not five stars. Why not? It holds only one battery. It's expected the second battery would be in the camera body, but why? These batteries should be kept charged and having one battery located where it's a hassle to get at it is a ridiculous design. My D90 carries two batteries in the grip, so why not my D7000 and D600? Sorry Nikon, that's simply thoughtless engineering. That knocks off half a star.

The other half star is knocked off for the price. Nikon, you have got to be kidding to charge in excess of $300 for a battery grip that doesn't even hold two batteries. I suggest potential buyers shop around at camera dealers to see if they can get it for less. I did.

I no longer bother with my time and money on aftermarket grips. My success rate with my other two Nikon cameras is 0 for 4. They all worked for a while and failed at the worst possible times. All became frustratingly intermittent. Those cameras now have Nikon grips and have functioned perfectly ever since.

If you have small hands or shoot only with smaller lenses a battery grip may not be for you unless you go vertical a lot.

I've always been used to the extra size and weight of having a power pack attached to my cameras (even from my days shooting with my still trusty Nikon F) and enjoy having the extra battery power at the ready, as well as the ergonomics of being able to shoot in portrait format whilst still having access to shutter release and choosing my shooting mode. I highly recommend this "accessory", which I consider a necessity, to anyone considering adding it to their DSLR. Nikon has even thought to put a small storage place on the unit itself in order to store the protective cover on the D600 camera that protects the connector, thus avoiding losing the small part should you decide to use the camera without the power pack and having that area exposed to the elements. The manual is clear and the pack includes both a carrier for the EN-L15 battery as well as a carrier for AA batteries with a protective case.

I purchased a Vello grip first, and was disappointed when it started causing my camera to malfunction. It wasn't worth the risk, so I returned it and bought the Nikon grip. Unbelievable difference in quality, to the touch and visually. I love my Nikon grip!

I originally bought a aftermarket grip for my camera and it worked OK for a little while then I went out of town For a getaway as of the norm I took my camera and when I was getting ready to take some pictures I didn't notice my display was malfunctioning and I realize that something was wrong with my camera . Took it to want to store a stout was affiliated with the place I bought my camera and they thought it was the display going out . I was playing around with my camera That night . And I found out that the display started back working Not knowing if it was the camera or what. But when I got back home I went back where I bought my Nikon they told me that it was the grip malfunctioning true enough. When I took it off it work fine .

I bought this for big hands more than anything. This grip is of course top quality, that's why after debating for weeks, I finally bought the Nikon one. I was afraid that I would have problems and regret a cheaper one. I installed it immediately upon receipt and felt some improvement in the way my right hand fit, especially at the bottom where my hand would typically curve under the camera. It adds significant weight to the camera, especially with AAs installed (the camera works with the battery tray empty if you just want the bulk), which partially takes away from the grip benefit. My fingers could never find a comfortable place to sit while holding the camera with the grip installed and so I couldn't justify the added weight and cost of keeping this. I returned it. If you're generally used to holding the camera without a grip, this may not be the improvement you're looking for, It's worth trying one to see if it helps your hands though. All controls felt top quality and everything functioned properly.
