As far as speech recognition, this is the best SpeechMike and amongst the best microphones that I have used ever. Excellent quality with almost 99% accuracy. And the trackball function is fairly decent. It is very ergonomic and comfortable to use. Used with Stanley Hardware 6-Inch Lifespan Heavy Strap Hinge, Zinc Plated #141500700, it becomes a table microphone. Motion sensing mute function is very useful.

Over the years, I have used 3 previous versions of SpeechMike microphones, and after using them for a year or two, I had to discard them because the cable connection with microphone frayed where it connects with the microphone. Finally, they have made the USB cable replaceable, now it plugs into the microphone. The firmware is also upgradable now. In theory, there is Mac software too.

This microphone has several programmable buttons - supposedly. But the Philips Device Control software has gotten much worse. It was always buggy, but the the version available as of now is really the worst. After using the software for a while, the buttons stop working. So you have to exit the Device Control Center software and start it all over again. Very annoying and just defeats the purpose of creating the buttons that can be customized.

The other two competitors to SpeechMike for handheld voice recognition, as of now, are

Phenomenal product. Used with Dragon Medical Practice Edition 2, nearly 100% accurate voice recognition (like 99.95%). I use this at home, and the Nuance PowerMic II at work. The buttons on the Philips are much nicer to press; they are firm and provide good feedback when pressed, whereas the PowerMic buttons are kind of squishy. The buttons can easily be assigned to control the Dragon software, but you have to quit the Philips control center and restart it before the saved changes will take effect. I highly also highly recommend the DMPE 2 software over previous versions of Dragon or competitors such as Talktech. Never have I had such amazingly accurate speech recognition.

I am a regular user of Dragon Naturally Speaking. So far, I have used Plantronics H 600 and H 800 headsets with Dragon for speech recognition. Both of them give excellent results. However it is difficult to carry and use a headset while travelling. So I was looking for a good microphone for that purpose and come across LFH 3500 speechmike premium. This device is many fold expensive than a Plantronics headset without any added benefits. It comes with a software to enhance the functionality of device for controlling different functions or other softwares using your handheld device. However everytime I have tried to customize the settings, they will not work. I have tried to contact Philips customer service but this device seems to be an orphan in Philips family. There is no phone to call customer service, I have sent couple of e mails which also did not work. Long story short, I am spent 335 $ to get the same quality of work which I was already getting with a 80 $ device. I will not recommend buying this device.

I currently use windows seven and my operating system, and DragonDictate professional version 12 latest upgrade.

This microphone works great and is much better than the headset I was using previously. I really like the controls, I don't have to yell into my microphone for to pick up my speech.

The number of errors made by Dragon has gone down significantly since I switched to this microphone. I would highly recommend it. I did a lot of research into the different microphones and am very happy that I did because this works great.

One of the biggest complaints about many of these handheld microphones is at the core tends to wear out with time. The nice thing about this Philips microphone is that the cord actually plugs into the microphone and can be replaced if it breaks without having to replace the entire microphone.

Not inexpensive at all, but it was worth every penny I paid for. I use Dragon Medical 2, and it came with Nuance own PowerMic. While I like that, I never bothered to program the microphone so I would not have to hold the power button on while I talk. Also it does look like a Fisher Price toy, I heard so much about this one and I have not looked back since.

It works with all versions of Dragon NaturallySpeaking. The consumer version, the legal version and the medical version. Nuance's PowerMic only works with Dragon Medical. That is one mistake they have made because they would sell more of it if the other versions support it.

The great feature that I really like is this microphone stops listening to me when I have to take a short break when it is placed on the table. It has a gyroscope inside, I understand, that knows when it is pointing up (in use) or placed flat on the table.

You must install the program that comes with it to work with Dragon NaturallySpeaking. It does look a little confusing, but once you get it going, it works very well and transparently. I feel that this thing will last me years, so if you "write" all the time like I do (I not only do this professionally, but I use it for all my writing), it really is worth what was paid for.

Of course you can save a lot of money and get yourself a Plantronics USB 478 headset which also works very well with Dragon, but I don't like to use the headset. Although it does free my hand, it gets in the way somehow.
