Excellent starter kit.

This is a nearly complete kit. Took about 35 minutes to assemble (I tried for about 25 minutes, then my eight year old took over and finished it off for me... yeah...). This kit includes the launch controller (zaps the "igniter" to launch the rocket), and the launch pad. All you need is a box of engines (which generally include the igniter and a plug to hold it in place) and some recovery wadding (some paper you stick in the rocket to keep the engine from burning it up and melting the parachute).

It uses the A8-3, B4-4, B6-4, C6-5, C6-7 engines. Buy one box of A8-3s for the first flight, but it only goes up maybe 70 feet, so bring some Bs or Cs too, because you're really, really wanna shoot it higher right after.

Recommend to tie the launch controller key to the launch pad cap. And emphasize having the launch pad cap on the launch pad rod all the time, until ready to fire.

Great toy for kids, needs some supervision. Good fun.

great toy that is as much fun as it is educational

Bought as a gift for my 5 year old daughter. With a little assistance from me she was able to do most of the assembly herself and she gave it a "custom" paint job just for fun. Be sure to buy engines and a 9v battery as those are not included. Buy more than one pack of engines and make sure the first is a low power engine like an A8-3 to use until you get a sense of how high you want it to go for your location. My daughter loves launching this and then chasing it down to catch it when it lands. A great toy as it teaches some hands on building skills, how to follow directions and gets kids excited about science, engineering and design while at the same time being fun, exciting and cool. Cool? Yes cool! Launching this at our local park always generates a crowd of onlookers and kids of all stripes asking where they can buy one. My daughter and her friends now always ask if we can build a rocket big enough for them to go into space. I dearly hope that one day they get their wish and perhaps playing with this is what inspires the person who makes it possible.

The only issues for novice rocketeers to be aware of is that 1. rockets are cheap but engines are not. engines will make the launch cost be between 2 and 5 dollars EACH time depending on where you get them and what you pay for shipping. It is possible to buy in bulk at hobby shops and save a bit of cash 2. the 9v battery in your launch controller needs to be fresh to ignite the engines. bring a spare to your launch site to avoid disappointment and 3. be sure to follow the included safety guidelines. These are black powder powered and if you are not careful fire or burns are possible. In other words adult supervision is required.

Not much has changed in 20+ years, and that's a good thing

Now that I have a son of my own, I pulled out all of my old model rocket stuff. The launchpad was partly broken and the ignition box was a bit corroded. So, I bought this mostly to replace those since the separate parts were only barely less money. The design hasn't changed much since the old one and works fine with the rockets I had leftover from my youth. The rocket that came with this set was almost a bit too simple to put together (although a few parts were too tight for a 4.5-year old to get just right) but it was done in about 30 minutes and has flown several times. The only problem we've found thus far is that 20+ year old engines don't always burn evenly. One exploded about 20 feet off the launchpad and nearly destroyed the rocket that it was in. Can't blame anyone for that though. 20+ years of imperfect storage will do that to propellants like that. :-)

Kind of bummed about the nostalga, but it went together well and can go shoot it off this weekend instead of waiting for things to dry.

I wanted a rocket to build with my 5 year old that required some assembly but not too much ... this rocket is a perfect kit for that. We built it and have launched several times successfully. For those claiming their rocket fails to launch it could be that their 9v battery doesn't have enough juice OR that you must press the launcher "key" in hard before pushing the button works. That is to say, you can't just put the key in, you have to push it down firmly so it squishes the rubber collar on the key. It took me a moment to figure that out.

An inexpensive way to get into rocketry

At the time of purchase this was the best deal we could find I don't want to set on Amazon. The Rocket is not that great but the launchpad and the controller are awesome and for the price it basically get the rocket for free. Be sure to order the other supplies needed to launch the rocket. You will need engines, igniters, and wadding. You don't want to get this set and have your child excited and not have the materials to be able to launch the rocket right away.

Rockets are fun...but check your local laws as the nanny state has a vote

Pretty good kit; a little harder to assemble than I thought it would be.

My only frustration is that in our litigious, overly cautious society, these are now banned in our locality. We have to go to one of two official launch sites, only open once a month, to launch these. Disappointing - might want to check your local rules. This is not a lick on the product - it's a * * * * kit - but one on society. I launched these as a ten year old in the park all the time as a kid, no issues. Now as an adult it's a no-go...silly.
