I bought these not knowing what to expect, I was attracted to their red color and sleek looks. I was quite surprised to hear the quality sound from these mics! I compared them to my vintage AKG's and they were very close, much to my liking! I have used them on a drum set and live vocals with much success!!! I plan on buying another pair to add to my collection!!! PaulieK from Buffalo NY

It is a good combination for anyone getting into recording. Lots of bang for the buck. The pencil condenser mic 551 will pick up any wind noise so placement is crucial and the 550 is going to take a decent shock mount and screen. They are good enough to never become obsolete, it is an inexpensive solution that you can always build on. They will require phantom power.

The main reason I purchased this set was for the 551 mic to use as an overhead for my snare drum and hi-hats which I play mainly with brushes. To be honest I rarely use it because the venues I play are small enough where I do not need to mic them. But when I do, the 551 picks up every nuance of my brushwork as well as even the lightest chick of my hi-hats. This kit comes with hard mounts, which work for the 551, but the 550 begs for a shock mount if you are going to use it for vocals. Of course, for vocals you will also want a pop filter.

On the topic of the 550 that is included, it's more of a studio vocal mic, but can also be used to mic a guitar, amp or even drums. Compared to the MXL-990 this one is vastly superior in every way. I mention this because the market seems flooded with the 990 model, which in my opinion gives MXL a bad name. The 550 - to me - is semi-pro quality at an entry level price and it turns out surprisingly good performance.

Also note that the 550 not a particularly hot mic, so if you do plan to use it live I recommend running it through a mic pre-amp. I use a PreSonus Tubepre Single-Channel Vacuum Tube Mic Pre, which takes this mic to the next level of performance. It also provides phantom power that both mics in this set require. To be honest, the 551 works just fine run directly into a PA with no additional processing in the signal path.

At the time of this review this set was well below a hundred bucks, and that includes two XLR cables. Those are not the best on the market, but they are more than adequate for most home studios and they add value to the overall package. At that price point you cannot go wrong if you are putting a home studio together on a budget.

For the cost, the ensemble pack is amazing! Stands up to condensed microphones 3 times the price. I have owned at least 5 different brands. Love the case, and 2,20 ft. cables, and microphone holders. Love the shiny red, and silver, it really pops! I would recommend this product without hesitation, they sound great! Thanks again Amazon, another great deal!
