I had seen the original and figured I'd watch an updated version for comparison. Really enjoyed this 1988 version, and Kirk Douglas was outstanding, eliciting just about every emotion known to man. As an evolutionist, the theme of the movie obviously disturbs me but does not detract from its quality. Ahh...when actors were true actors....

Great cast and acting, but it didn't contribute anything extra to the original version made in 1960 with Spencer Tracy and Fredric March. The newer version somehow didn't engage us enough to feel its intended power. Another example that it is better not to make a remake of a great movie regardless of another set of good actors.

A fantastic classic. The later version was quite good but this initial version still holds sway and hold the number one artistic spot. It never occurred to me in later years that we still would be fighting this same evolution/creation battle. Impossible but reality as we speak.

Go see the original with Spencer Tracy! He and his fans considered this his best role! Hauntingly RELEVANT during today's political scene!

THis was obviously a made for TV version with continuity breaks where the commercials had been. Still, good performance by Kirk Douglas

This is a good, but not great, representation of the play, "Inherit the Wind." In production values it does not compare with the original film starring Spencer Tracy and Fredric March. It also does not compare with the latest remake starring George C. Scott as Brady (William Jennings Bryan). Compare the acting by the three men who played reporter Hornbeck (supposed to be H.L. Mencken): Gene Kelly, first; Darren McGavin, second; and Beau Bridges in the Scott version. The middle film, much shorter, lacks character development.
