I am one of the "one in a million" owners that knows first hand the utter heartbreak and devastation that comes from losing a cherished dog to a collar accident. My 15 month old Rottweiler (75lbs) was strangled to death by her rolled leather collar (not a choke) while playing outside with another dog. The other dog's tooth got caught in the buckle and he strangled her in his twisting attempt to get free. She was much bigger and stronger, but it didn't matter. It was fast and too quiet to alert someone in the home to what was happening.

We now have a new puppy and this is the only collar she wears around the house. It is true that it does come free on occasion, but that typically means that she was stuck on something and pulled hard enough to break apart the clasp. The clasp is easily reassembled and there is no damage to the collar. If there are times where you do not want the collar to separate with pressure, all you need to do is link both D-rings together, like with the buckle of a leash when you go for a walk. I suppose you could do this with a carabiner or something for other circumstances where you don't want the collar to separate, but that would probably defeat the purpose.

I bought this collar after a neighbor tragically lost a dog to strangulation. Their two dogs were playing together, and one's tooth got caught in the other's collar. The collar twisted while the dogs struggled, and by the time the owner got them apart (big dogs, small person), the one dog had stopped breathing, and she could not resuscitate it. This is apparently a fairly common occurrence, but until this happened I had not heard of it.

So, after a great deal of research and discussion, there appear to be three common approaches to preventing this kind of tragedy, but each has its obvious limitations.

The first is to remove the dogs' collars whenever they're indoors or unattended. This eliminates the risk completely, but means that your dog isn't wearing tags, and can't be easily restrained by grabbing a collar.

The second approach, which I'd say is probably the least you'd want to do, is to get a quick-release collar. In the instance I described with my neighbor, it took her minutes to remove the collar because it was cinched tightly--too tight for her to get the slack she needed to release the collar. She ultimately had to cut it off. The problem with this approach is that strangulation can still occur if you're not watching when it happens.

The third approach is the breakaway collar. When pulled tight enough, this collar will come apart at the link point, preventing strangulation. The benefits are obvious, as is the drawback: You can't use the collar to restrain the dog, since the link will release and you'll be left with the collar in your hand.

The Petsafe KeepSafe collar is actually a hybrid of solutions 2-3, in that it is both a quick-release collar and a breakaway.

After losing one of our dogs to a tragedy with a standard collar, we so wish we knew this type of collar existed. Our two dogs were playing in the yard, each had standard collars. Somehow, the collar got caught on one dog's mouth and formed a figure eight around our dogs neck and the other dogs snout. It all happened in less than ten minutes... our dog died and our other dog had a tooth ripped from his mouth... they couldn't get free. If you have two or more dogs who like to play, I hope this never, ever happens... it is devastating. We recently got another rescue dog and decided to give these collars a try. (it was either this, or no collars at all) The collars are excellent. It has been over month since we got them, and they don't come off too easily. The collars don't even release if I hold on to our dogs by their collars. (they are 60lbs dogs) A few weeks ago the dogs were outside playing and one of them came in without her collar. I went outside to find it on the ground, released at the break-away clasp. We'll never use anything else. I can't believe these aren't widely available at the local pet supply stores.

All dogs should have safety / break-away collars. We bought these collars for our dogs who like to wrestle after one dog's jaw got caught in the collar of our other dog, hurting his jaw and choking the other dog to the point where we nearly lost him. I didn't think we needed to worry about collar safety because we are almost always with our dogs and often remove the collars when we leave them home alone. This collar does what it is supposed to do and will snap if pulled on too strongly. You can easily snap it back together and put it back on your dog. Be sure to use both d-rings if you attach a leash to the collar and your dog is a puller, as he may pull hard enough to break out of the collar. We use harnesses to walk our dogs and twice now I haven't been paying attention to what I clip the leash to and he has pulled so hard that he broke out of the collar. Lesson learned and I now always look at where I'm hooking it up (to the harness rather than the collar, but if you use both rings you can safely attach it to the collar).
