ONE YEAR UPDATE, Jan 28, 2014
Please see my original review below the update.

I am still trying to finish a house, we had some strange turns in our life so I am not a typical user. When I bought the program I was trailing electronically behind an architect who was doing the work by hand. Eight months ago we moved and started all over with out house. I am happy to say it is now almost finished. When I got into that level of design, I upgraded to Chief Architect which is the professional program. I was able to rent it by the month to match our project. There are a few steps to go through to be able to read a Chief Architect professional program on Home Designer but once you know it is no big deal. I am still VERY Happy with the program. Even with a high level of skill there are some quirks but that is not uncommon with a lot of computer programs. After being a daily user of both of the Chief Architect programs here are a few pros and cons. The Pros far outweigh the cons and the improvements seem to be the ones that people were most interested in seeing changed. Kudos Chief Architect.

PRO
1. Absolutely the best tech support I have ever experienced. There are scads of video tutorials that are free. The manual online is searchable even with poor organization of search terms when you don't quite know what you are trying to ask about. When you do need a person's help, someone is right on the phone with you to help. I made a really big mess once and they asked me to send a copy of my entire file for them to review. They posted an answer for me. I was so surprised. And, they are just downright nice folks.

2. The 3D modeling allows you to do a lot of things I did not know as an early user.

I think the other reviews written here already, are well done. So I think, as a Chief Premier Professional, long-time user, teacher and author of and about this software I will talk about the differences between Home Designer Pro and its "Big Brother": Chief Premier.
At 18" X 24" Pro's maximum native paper size is workable for most projects, especially remodeling projects. Other than that, the main differences are customizing your 3-D model, custom symbol making and editing and other refinements such as photo-realistic image rendering.
At less that a quarter of the price of Chief Premier, Home Designer Pro is a steal. Just about anything that you can do in Chief Premier can be done in Home Designer Pro, it just takes some additional "click" and steps to arrive. It is based upon Chief Premier and a great way to get introduced to 3-D modeling, CAD design and construction documentation, creation of.

I started using Chief Architect software in 2001/2002 when it was licensed to Broderbund. I've tried others, like Punch Pro, but I've found them more complicated to use so I went back to Chief Architect. I've purchased at least six different versions of their software (Broderbund, Better Homes & Gardens and Chief Architect) and I've never been disappointed. Their software does everything most do-it-yourselfers need. It does a great job of helping you see the end result before spending all the money actually building it. I've taken screen shots of the 3D images and compared them to the end product and it's amazing how much alike they look. It does have a learning curve so I suggest watching the tutorials and using the Chief Architect support forum. I typically buy the Designer Suite version but I needed to do more complicated roof designs so, I decided to buy the Pro version.

Their customer support is amazing. I've used the online support for questions and I get back a quick response that points me to the help I need. My most recent experience happened today. I had work due in a week for a couple designing their retirement cottage and I needed the new version. I was using a prior version for an upgrade credit and I couldn't figure out how to do that on amazon.com so I purchased the software online from their site on Saturday, December 22. I couldn't figure out how to log in and customer support isn't open on the weekend so, I sent an email and figured I'd speak to someone the following Monday. However, Monday was December 24 and when I called, they had a message stating that they were closed for the holidays.

I am an architect/contractor doing residential work. I have been using Revit which is a full blown professional product which is quite costly, has a steep learning curve and lots of features unnecessary for single family remodeling work. I got the trial version of Home Designer Pro to check it out as a viable alternative for use on single family projects. Most of the simple programs available are not adequate for a professional job and set of drawings. HD Pro seemed as though it might fill the bill. After experimenting with the trial - you can't save drawings or print them - it might be nice to be able to save them but there is a 30 day trial period for the purchased version anyway. The program seems quite comprehensive and has a lot of BIM functions, though not quite like Revit. I haven't produced a full set of drawings yet but some basic things are evident.

The rendering functions are more basic than the high end programs and the program makes assumptions which while in general ok and helpful to many but can be a little frustrating to those used to making their own decisions. It probably permits people who don't quite know what they are doing to produce credible looking drawings, and it means the designer has to be careful to check the defaults and options the program offers very carefully. As I work with the program I'm sure this will become clearer. While not as complex as Revit and similar programs, it is still quite complex and flexible and learning all the features and tricks will take time. I have not had time to explore its' use for detailing. So far it seems like a suitable choice for me. It is not so inexpensive that one would use it just for the fun of it, but it is a time saver for modest commercial use and seems as though it can produce a professional standard of work. All in all I would say it's a nice program at a reasonable price. For regular professional work Chief Architect would probably be justified.
