I am doing a kitchen/bath addition to our lake house and have used 3-D Home Architect in the past. It was a decent entry level program and extremely easy to use but had a lot of limitations. Then I found out that it had been redesigned by Chief Architect as a DIY program called Home Designer Architectural and thought I would give it a whirl. It turns out to be nothing less than perfect for what I needed. It is extremely intuitive and user friendly with drag and drop interface that makes designing house additions and new construction relatively easy and fun, if you're into that sort of stuff. There's a tremendous amount of detail, logic and resources within the program that not only does just about anything you want, but inspires you to maximize your designs so there are no corners left unturned. The 3-D is awesome and allows you to do a full overview of the design and toggle a camera view perspective where you can spin the design in space and see all the angles (I caught lots of mistakes with this). You can set up defaults for just about anything (which really takes the tedium out of repeated functions)and extensive libraries of furniture, fixtures, wood types and colors, etc that can all be re-sized easily. It even lets you define a wall with dimensions that include every layer, ie: drywall, OSB, stud width, siding, etc! It lets you look at the framing, at various elevations and lots of other stuff that I haven't even used yet. Then it generates a complete materials list that allows you to price out how much everything is going to cost. I showed my design to a builder in Indiana for an estimate and he was blown away at how through it was, and I have passed the floor plan on to an architect who will make the building plans so I know everything is good as far as stress loads, etc.Read more ›

It costs more than Suite, Essentials, Landscape and Deck Designer and Interiors because it does what they do and a lot more!

It is not for the Professional Designer but rather for the discerning amateur who wants more choices and tools. It is perfect for sharing your dreams with other building professionals to make sure you will get exactly what you want from your additions or remodeling intentions.

If you want manual control over roof and framing design, you should make the jump to Home Designer Pro but if not this one is for you!

I usually don't take the time to do reviews for products, but in this case, I think my time is justified. I am not and never have been an employee of this company, so this is a no-kidding unbiased review.

I am thinking about a small addition to a cabin and wanted to draw some decent renditions and alternatives to the layout. I had previously used Visio where I used to work, so I was looking for that, or a similar substitute, like SmartDraw. I found out, however, that these tools are quite expensive. Looking further, I bumped into the Chief Architect Home Designer 2014 series. Seeing the good reviews and ratings, and looking further, I was surprised by the promise of capabilities even with the lower level products, like the "Suite" or "Essentials" levels. But even the extremely capable "Architectural" level would cost less than Visio and SmartDraw. So, I took the risk, and bought the "Architectural" package from Amazon.

I realized very quickly that it would take some time to properly learn this tool. So I committed a large part of several days to view the 77 short videos they provide you for this level of the product. My eyes were watered by the level of detail and capabilities provided. Then I worked through the 7 tutorials that guide you through the design of a pretty significant beach home, consisting of 2 two above ground stories and a basement. For a package that costs just $200, I am floored not only by its capabilities, but also the accuracy and detailed nature of the training modules. In a detailed but low-cost package like this, I expected to find significant errors and inconsistencies in the training, but I am delighted to say that I found very few.

I have used various home design software over the past 20+ years, but was blown away after downloading and running Chief Architect's Premier X5 Trial Version. Its ease of use, range of features, libraries, excellent online video tutorials, etc make an outstanding application. The bad news, this version costs over $2K which was not feasible for my use. The good news, Chief Architect offers more affordable products in the Home Designer line. After comparing those options on Chief Architect's website, I chose Home Designer Architectural 2014. Obviously the $2K version includes much more functionality such as creating construction drawings, but, so far, Architectural 2014 has all the functionality for my current needs. Should I need construction drawings, my understanding is the plans created in Architectural 2014 are compatible with Premier ... the challenge then is to find someone who can provide that service.

I have purchased Home Designer based on a raving review by my neighbor, and have really enjoyed what I've seen so far.

Also, I happened to purchase right before the new version (2014) came out. A quick call to customer support -- literally under 4 minutes -- is all it took to send me a quick for that I can use to update my 2012 version to 2014 at no extra charge. Seriously impressive customer support!
