In the process of pursing that will-of-the-wisp, the best cat food, for my kitty, I have become interested in learning something about the many products.

With so many cats in the United States, and owners devoted to them, the cat food industry is highly competitive. Sheba cat food has had a long, mixed history. Owned by the large privately-held Mars Corporation, the makers of chocolate such as the "Three Musketeers", Sheba cat food went through several reformulations before Mars discontinued it and took it off the United States market in 2011. Mars reinvented and changed Sheba upon bringing it back in 2012. Mars is marketing Sheba aggressively in a valiant attempt to win a share of the business. For example, as shown here on Amazon, upon its reintroduction, Sheba was made available through Vine. I tried the product upon finding a coupon in the newspaper which offered it at half-price on the purchase of ten cans.

Sheba competes at the popular, lower end of wet cat foods sold in supermarkets as an alternative to Friskies, Fancy Feast, and Nine-Lives. Sheba's webpage indicates that the product comes in 24 varieties, available in pate or in cuts with gravy. Sheba differentiates itself from its competitors by using "real" fish, poultry, or beef in its products as the primary ingredient as opposed to the by-products which predominate in competitors of its price range. Sheba also claims that its fish products, including tuna, whitefish, and salmon, are "responsibly sourced" in accordance with the Monterey Bay Aquarium Seafood Watch program. Sheba sea food products use farmed or wild-caught fish from environmentally responsible sources in accordance with these developed guidelines.

I have four cats. Two of them are completely converted to wet food, but I have two holdouts. One of the holdouts used to love the old Sheba food (at least when he was sick and on prednisolone, which did increase his appetite quite a bit). However, Sheba went off the market for awhile and when it came back, it was different. Still, in an effort to entice this cat to eat wet food (which my vet tells me is better for cats -- easier to digest and a good source of water), I decided to buy half a dozen varieties of Sheba.

The former Sheba-lover wouldn't touch this. I gave his dish to two other cats, though, and they ate it quickly. Therefore, I don't think I'll knock off any points for taste because 2 of the 3 cats I offered it to liked it a great deal, and the one who didn't hasn't liked any wet food I've given him yet. I offered this food a second time to one of the cats who liked it, and he ate it again.

This food has little pieces of meat that you can actually see, in a gravy sort of sauce. I'm mostly OK with the ingredients. There is some starch, probably there as a thickener (it's pretty low on the ingredients list), but the first few ingredients are at least meat-related: poultry broth, chicken, turkey, meat by-products, chicken liver, beef liver, etc. I'm pleased that there's no wheat in here, and also that there's no soy. Cats don't really need those things, being obligate carnivores.

All-in-all, I'd consider this food a success.

Little Miss is twelve. She's been with me since she was small enough to fit in my palm. This fall, she became ill. Our vet ran tests, but nothing came up abnormal. He said she was likely stressed about something, experiencing some anxiety, and that was why she was not eating.

I followed my vet's advice and bought a can of "every" "gravy" or "stew" cat food at my local store. Usually, these are considered less nutritious because of their high moisture content, but Little Miss was dehydrated and needed the boost of broth in her system. My vet offered Sheba as a recommendation, but he was afraid I couldn't afford it, until I told him about Amazon's bulk flats of food. Did I mention that I love Little Miss?

It is months later now. I have a list of foods to rotate for when she starts to lose her appetite. Sheba Cuts in Gravy feature largely in Little Miss's diet, but not only because she enjoys the taste. The gravy is a valuable source of moisture and helps combat dehydration. The ingredient list makes me confident that I'm feeding Little Miss the best food possible -- no corn or wheat, and just look at all of the real meat products! Even the product smells good (whether or not the cat box does afterwards).

When I buy wet cat food, Sheba Cuts in Gravy is my first choice.

I divided the can between our five cats. The two eating machines cleaned it up instantly. The 'normal' cat ate most of it but left a tiny bit. The two finicky ones licked the gravy off, then left the solids. They wouldn't touch them at all. One of the voracious eaters came by and ate it later, though.

Since this is pretty much how they eat regular canned cat food, I'd say this is a good cat food, but not really any better than the lower priced ones.

I bought a case each of three flavors of the Sheba Premium with Gravy (for some variety), and my kitten purrs when she sees the can, then she waits impatiently for me to scoop it out into her bowl...

April 2014
Another update. We have 13 cans of Sheba Premium Gravy left, and my kitten has now resorted to tipping the food bowl completely upsidedown--with considerable trouble--because it is ceramic and very heavy. It looks like I will be donating 13 cans to the local shelter.

March 2014
My kitten LOVES "Fancy Feast Gravy Lovers" Variety pack! There are 8 each of Turkey, Chicken-Roast, and Beef, and for a great price! It's real meat, and she licks up every drop, so we're both happy. I only give her 1 can each day (despite the can directions), along with a separate bowl of Meow Mix Kitten dry food which she also enjoys very much.

(UPDATE: I tried Fancy Feast Gravy Lovers because my kitten licked up the Sheba gravy eagerly but was slow to finish, or left the morsels.)

I still have some Sheba Premium Gravy so I am alternating, and she likes it, although she sometimes licks up all of the Sheba gravy and leaves the spongy-morsels to dry up.

I have tried Sheba Premium Gravy Chicken, Turkey, Turkey and Giblets, Mixed Grill, and Premium Beef Pate. I was unable to find out what "Mixed Grill" means--even on the company website. My kitten does not like the Pate (paste or ground-up versions from a free sample).
