The Turtle Beach Ear Force ZLa Gaming Headset isn't meant to be an audiophile headset. That's fine. Most gamers aren't willing to pay a big price tag for a headset, so the headphones are constructed out of inexpensive, but effective plastic.

The headset sounds decent, but will distort when played at high volume. The microphone also does the job with no issues. Headset volume and microphone muting can be controlled using a small pod that's mounted on the cable which clips to the users shirt. The headset will plug directly into my iPhone or iPad and allows voice input as well as audio. There's a splitter cable that can be used to attach to systems that have separate headphone and microphone jacks.

While the headset can be adjusted to fit on a variety of head sizes, the ear pieces sit on top of the ear and depending on how well they fit, can become uncomfortable after extended periods of use. It became uncomfortable after about 15 minutes for me, but my daughter didn't have any problems with discomfort.

At the price point, I can forgive a lot of shortcomings, but the stiffness of the cable is probably my biggest problem with the headset. The cable is made from a fairly cheap feeling plastic and tends to stay in the shape from the original packaging and becomes snarled very easily. A more flexible cable that doesn't retain the shape would be a much needed improvement.

Another shortcoming is the headphone jack. It pokes straight out from the device and tends to get in the way when holding an iPad. Worse still, the plug doesn't make good contact inside the device and will cut in and out when the plug moves, a problem that's greatly exacerbated by the cheap plastic cable.

I was surprised at the clarity of this headset when I used it with Skype and similar apps. With the very flexible mic boom about a hand's width from my mouth, my voice is clear, free of noise and distortion and a little bit bassy. A welcome change from what I perceive as the norm in inexpensive headsets.

I've worn them for upwards of an hour without discomfort. Audio quality is good for voices, okay for music. Definitely not suited for the audiophile.
You will not win any fashion awards with this headset. It is big and clunky. In fact, I get the feeling that it was designed to appeal to young boys with its kind of military tech design. Construction is all plastic and I have doubts about its long-term durability. Well, not doubts really - I'm sure it will fall apart pretty quickly if I let my grandchildren use it.

The inline controller works well for volume adjustment: the little wheel is big enough for my ancient, gnarled fingers to adjust.

My big objection? The cord is on the short side, maybe four feet.

Overall, assessing it as an inexpensive headset and not comparing it to more expensive and higher quality units, it is among the top of that particular crop. For Skype, Google+ Hangouts and similar voice applications, it is really excellent.

If you're on a budget but and need to keep your gaming or chatting contained for small periods of time here and there but still want decent sound and voice quality then this is a good buy. If you are planning on using this as your main source of gaming or chat audio then I'd keep looking.

The sound quality from this headset is pretty good for the price, but that's really the only feature that exceeds the price point of the headset. The construction overall feels very cheap and looks that way too. I'm often worried that its going to break just by being put on my head, and I'm certain that if it were to take any sort of accidental damage that it would be history. Sadly, even the higher TB headsets often suffer from this problem, cheap plastic is not your friend.... The headset also get uncomfortable after a couple hours, so if you're using it just for short periods then it should be fine, but when the hours stack up you'll start to feel it in your ears.

I'll say it again, for the price, not bad, but you're getting what you pay for.

I wear a men's size XL (extra large) hat, which puts me in about the top 1/4 of male head sizes. Despite its rather large/bulky size, there is no way to adjust this headset so that it fits comfortably. The only available adjustment changes its height, but barely affects its width. It presses hard on my ears and is uncomfortable within a minute. That's unacceptable for any headset, but especially for a gaming headset one might wear a long time. Users with smaller head sizes might find it comfy.

Sound quality when listening is very good for vocal clarity and loudness. For music, it is good in the bass and midrange but lacks clarity in the treble. The microphone is reasonably clear, very sensitive (picks up even quiet mouth movements), and nicely adjustable. So with good speech quality in both directions and good loudness, it's a good choice for smaller-headed people for gaming.

Despite its narrow fit, the outer size of the headset is so big, one might look a bit goofy wearing it. So, not recommended for a videoconference, and not a great choice for travel.
