Update: Microsoft updated the Office 2013 license. You may now transfer the software to another computer that belongs to you, but not more than one time every 90 days (except due to hardware failure, in which case you may transfer sooner). If you transfer the software to another computer, that other computer becomes the "licensed computer." The Office 365 Subscription products work on up to 5 PCs, Macs, and select mobile devices without license transferability limitations.

I only use MS Visio for working with database models so my review is limited to that one type of diagram.

I just don't know what Microsoft is thinking. Clearly, they do not listen to the customers that do serious database work with Visio. They removed the ability to reverse-engineer. In Visio 2010, I could connect to a database, reverse-engineer that into a database model, and then make changes to update the design. Not any more.

No more support for specifying data types.

Foreign keys are no longer placed automatically when designing 1:M relationships.

Primary keys are no longer underlined, which means you must leave the clunky "PK" symbol next to the attribute if you want to indicate primary keys. Even worse, now the PK and FK symbols are in boxes so they take up even more space on the diagram. Take it another step -- they have separate columns for "PK" and "FK" now so the left side of an entity is even wider to support the two columns for the symbol boxes.

The end result is that fitting more than six or so entities on a page is difficult. How many real, business databases have only six or so entities? None.

Specifying attributes for an entity was previously done in a tabular window so you could just <TAB> to keep entering attributes. Now, it requires adding attributes like you were adding text boxes to the entity.

It looks like the database diagrams in Visio were redesigned by graphic artists who know a lot about making the screen look pretty on a tablet, but nothing about how the software is actually used. After a couple of months trying to work with it, I've uninstalled Visio 2013 and have gone back to my previous version.

We purchased the electronic download/key. We needed to move to a different machine and it was impossible. Seven calls to Microsoft got us nowhere. My suggestion is to always get the disk. Do not open yourself up to abuse and frustration working with Microsoft.

Before you purchase either a download or a media version of Visio 2013 do yourself a favor and go directly to the Microsoft site and download the fully functional version of Visio 2013 Pro. You’ll need to jump through a few hoops (Like creating a Windows Live account, if you don’t already have one), and installing Office 365. You won’t have to install any of the other office products (which are also available as a trial), but the total process is more complex than you’d think. What you’ll wind up with is a version of Visio Pro 2013 installed on your PC, along with the opportunity to use it for a full month, and have lots of assistance available. At any time during the trial you can convert the product to a monthly fee, stop using it, or go ahead and buy a boxed version. If it works for you, fine, if not, move on to something that better fits your needs. You’ll find some features that were available on earlier versions are no longer available, along with some nice new features that weren’t previously available. This is a great deal.

The two reasons I needed Visio were as follows:
1. Provide environment for easy diagramming
2. Reverse engineer databases in SQL Server for quick ERD generation

I can do item 1, which is fine. It's the absolute baseline expectation I have for diagramming software. However, Microsoft removed item 2; Visio 2013 can't reverse engineer a database and generate a database diagram. Pretty much all Visio users who upgraded to 2013 have been complaining about this tragic fail by Microsoft. So, here's another complaint. This product is not even worth 1/10 of the price without database reverse engineering support. You can play with shapes in most Microsoft Office products.

What a waste of money. If you really want Visio, just get 2010 or lower, if that's even still possible.

UPDATE (12/17/2013):
It is very glitchy and tiresome to attempt doing item 1, which is not fine. In Visio 2010, you were able to type into a properties window to quickly add columns to a database diagram. Now, you have to drag and drop attributes one-by-one, and half of the time, the software doesn't even work right. This can cause a little stress when you're trying to diagram a large database. If I could give negative stars to this product, I would. It has failed to provide a basic diagramming need and has removed several much-needed features that were considered standard in previous versions, but hey, at least it's shiny and has animations, right?

Save yourselves.

Purchased today, now I'm into two+ hours trying to debug why it won't install on a new Windows 8 machine. At one point, Microsoft tried to charge me for support - for installing a brand new product! I can't tell if this is a 2013 issue or just a Microsoft office.com issue - but stay away if you can!

Caveat - I'm a long time Amazon (prime) customer - this is my first experience w/ Amazon customer service.

Update - after Microsoft customer service didn't get back in our agreed time window I finally got Amaozon to agree to refund. Ignoring my time - I've spent more on cell roaming time (I'm travelling on business) than almost the product cost. With Amazon, after repeated denials for a refund - I finally reminded them of their tagline, ~ "world's best customer experience". Turns out they then refunded my order when I rated them as poor to mediocre.

Net net - Microsoft customer service is organized as a terrible experience - after two hours I haven't spoke with anyone other than level one/two customer support. Amazon download is apparently a separate division with very restrictive policies.
