Finally, this very interesting and unusual item is available. Here are the John Pisano-Billy Bean Quintet Recordings from the fifties on Decca, two albums, "Makin' It" and "Take Your Pick".

I am more familiar w Take Your Pick. Some friends had it back in the '70's when we would drive to a record dealer's home to buy recordings that are now available to us at the mere push of a keyboard button! The cover of the album is very cool!

There is a chamber jazz/classical feel to almost half of this with strings, flute and brass. These are sprinkled throughout both albums. While interesting, it is not the straight ahead blowing session of a small jazz guitar combo; the other tracks, about half of the album are with bass, drums and vibes. The guitar playing is superb and quite masterful bop.

Both Pisano and Bean are relatively obscure guitarists; their bodies of work, particularly from the fifties is scant. John Pisano stayed active much longer but is not usually heard as an all out blowing guitarist. He was w Chico Hamilton at the time of these recordings. Chico is on these sessions.

Billy Bean is very hot handed; I always felt he reminded me of Tal Farlow in his playing. There is not really much out there on him.

The two are showcased here on short, sweet, concise tunes.

It's been unavailable for a long time. I am delighted that this has become available. Loaded with hot guitar playing and highly interesting and unusual!

You may be familiar with John Pisano, but Billy Bean is not exactly a household name. His talent is so unmistakable, though, that it boggles the mind trying to understand why he is not better known. Together, Pisano and Bean - backed by a number of different ensembles - display a prowess on their instruments that every guitarist should study.

The two albums that comprise this set were recorded for Decca over the course of nine sessions between January 24 and March 21 1958. While all of the sessions were recorded in the Decca Recording Studios in Los Angeles, the personnel on every session varied significantly. The albums are Makin' It Again that was released as Decca DL 9206 and Take Your Pick that was released as Decca DL 9212.

The first ten tracks are from Makin' It Again and the remaining twelve are Take Your Pick. The session information for these two albums are somewhat complex, so I am going to append that information in a comment to this review. That will save the casual fan from bordom and a cluttered product page.

It's the music that counts. While there are no sound samples on this page at the time of this review you can listen to them on this album: Essential Jazz Guitar Masters. Note that the track sequence on that page is out of order, but all of the tracks are there. As you listen to the samples it's quickly apparant that the styles are all over the place. This is because of the many personnel changes and the arrangements. While many of the tracks are performed by quartets, some are by quintets, septets and full orchestras.

This record is a must-hear classic of the jazz guitar-duets genre. It features the interaction of Billy Bean and John Pisano in a number of settings and reveals the inventiveness and facility of both players beautifully. Billy Bean is a much underrated player deserving of far wider recognition. His technique and feel are reminiscent of Joe Pass in the Pacific Jazz years. John Pisano is also very adept and a perfect foil and complement to Bean's impassioned flights.
