The SL-F1 is not the shortest pen I have, but it may be the most convenient. No clicky-clacky here, just stretch it open, compress it closed. It's even simpler than the True Utility pen, because it doesn't need a cap. The SL-F1 dimensions are published, but my own measurements are: length: 3.318 compressed, 4.231 expanded; barrel diam: 0.320; weight: 11 g.

I didn't need the clip so I Dremeled it off (see photo).

For me, the best thing about the SL-F1 is the d1 refill. Easy to change, and many makers to choose from. Following are quick and subjective judgments of some refills. Score higher equals better, on: line darkness, smoothness, tendency to skip, tendency to blob:
Monteverde 0.7: 2;2;3;2
Monteverde 1.4: 4;3;2;2 (interesting attempt in bold ballpoint ink)
Zebra 4C 0.7: 2;2;3;1 (SL-F1 ships with this)
Zebra Sharbo X Gel 0.5: 4;1;4;3 (this is the gel alternative, good looking, but runs out fast)
Pilot 1.0: 2;3;2;2 (not recommended, dimensionally unfit)
Platinum 0.7: 2;2;3;1
Tombow 0.7: 2;2;4;2
Schmidt M: 2;3;4;3 (decent overall performance)
Rotring M: 2;2;3;2
Parker M: 2;3;2;3
Cross M: 2;3;3;3 (not recommended, dimensionally unfit)
Lamy M21 M: 2;2;3;2 (works, though actually undersized)

The easy availability of refills which fit without hacking is a big plus, because there is some voodoo about carrying a ballpoint around in your jeans that makes good refills go bad.

Currently I am switching back and forth between pocket pens, but the SL-F1 is definitely a contender.

Many vendors, including Amazon's, charge too much for this pen. Become acquainted with its normal retail price before ordering.

My quest for the ultimate wallet pen included this pen plus three others, the Rotring Esprit, the Ohto Petit-B, and a pen I made myself and will describe later.

Of that group, this pen was, by far, the best choice for keeping out of the way in my wallet until needed. It is surprisingly comfortable, despite its small size. It uses standard, multi-point refills including the good quality yet inexpensive Rotring Multi-Pen D1 Mini Ball Point Refill and the "write anytime and anywhere" Fisher Space Pen Universal Refill.

The video provides a comparison and demonstration of how well this pen fits into my wallet. Also, if you want to make the home made pen shown, all you need is a refill like the ones mentioned here, a 1-1/2" long x 1/8" piece of heat shrinkable tubing, for example Heat Shrinkable Wire Wrap Set-24-piece, and a bobby pin.

When I’m working around the house, I almost invariably see, realize, or remember there’s something I’ve got to do, or buy, or check. In the meantime, I’m probably working doing, checking, or buying something else, if I don’t make a note, I’ll forget. While I’m a huge fan of keeping track of this information electronically (preferably cloud-based and accessible from my phone and my PC), but pulling my phone out of my pocket, finding the right app, and typing a note with a small glass keyboard is not always the quickest and easiest way to keep track of that sort of information. I’ve found that a small, pocket-sized memo pad or notebook is still the fastest and easiest way to keep track of that.

For instance, if I’m using my phone and I need to create a task or to-do, I use GTasks, which synchronizes with Google Tasks. If I need to buy something, I use the Out Of Milk app, which creates shopping lists. If I need to schedule an event, I use Gmail Calendar. That’s three separate apps, all of which require a data connection and require typing on a small glass keyboard. A small paper memo pad with a pen is far quicker and easier, and any note can be converted to electronic format later if necessary.

I’ve found that the most convenient memo pad is one that fits in my pocket and is small enough not to interfere with walking or working around the house. Mowing the yard is a perfect example, because it involves walking slowly around my entire yard, takes about an hour and a half, and I invariably see something I’ve got to do, or come up with an idea of something I’d like to do. If I have a memo pad in my pocket, I can make a note as soon as I think of it. If I don’t make a note immediately, I’ll probably forget. However, a memo pad doesn’t work without a pen.

This is a wonderful little pen, solidly made, perfect for my wallet/notebook. Comfortable to hold, with just enough heft (there is no plastic anywhere, ladies and gentlemen) to keep it from feeling like a stylus. It lays down a smooth, easy fine line, clear and precise. I've used Zebra products before--I've had one of their mechanical pencils for nearly 20 years--and the construction is robust, the design is elegant, and function is superb. Pull out the barrel to lengthen the pen and expose the point. This mechanism is clever and operates smoothly.

If you are looking for a very compact yet elegant pen, this is the one. Blows the Fisher Space Pen Stowaway (its closest competitor at the same form factor) out of the water. I know this because I bought both of them in the same order.
