Nils Frahm has a most disarming way of letting the music emerge from a life. His Wintermusik was originally conceived as a Christmas gift for family and close friends. The distinctive sound of his Felt recital was the result of his experimenting with different ways to dampen the sound of his piano when rehearsing late at night in his thin-walled appartment. `Screws' is the acoustic fall-out of a misadventure. Frahm broke his thumb - pretty annoying for a heavily booked pianist - and a cast was put on his hand. Despite doctor's warning not to touch his instrument, Frahm couldn't resist and started to doodle with 9 fingers. He set up one microphone and recorded another tune every other night before falling asleep. Hence `Screws'.

It's a very short recital and many will balk at paying full price for a CD that runs to less than half an hour. No worries as Frahm provides a free download of this mini-album on his website. But the $15 would be well-spent anyway as support for this unassuming artist who doesn't care for the backing of a major label.

Like `Felt' this is a headphone recital. Frahm adopted a somewhat similar low-fi ambiente with an even background hiss, a slightly muffled piano sound and stray resonances defining the aural ambiente. Given the physical constraints it is no surprise that all tracks are short, sparse, slow and sotto voce. Rhythmically and harmonically they partake of a similar atmosphere. Frahm mixes in an occasional bluesy progression, or hints at the cleanliness of a Bachian invention. `Screws' is a nocturnal meditation, gentle and fragile. The artist's trademark finesse transcends the modest aims and means and turns this brief recital into something that provides genuine musical and spiritual sustenance.
