I used this for 104 days straight on a 4,700 mile cycling tour across the USA. I had it strapped onto my trailer and let it charge up with the Boulder 30 while I was riding and on my off days in urban environments and at campgrounds. In my journey, Off the Grid Across America, I vowed to use solely electricity from my solar panels and Goal Zero made it happen. A few times I ran into a few days of heavy rain but I only plugged into 5 outlets the entire journey and never had to turn on a light switch. The Boulder 30 along with the Sherpa 50 kept my Macbook Air charged to keep me in touch with the outside world and give me plenty of time to blog about the trip. I couldn't have done this journey without this gear. I also used it to charge my iPhone. This is a well though out product that can charge a wide array of gear from its many ports.

I live in Florida, so there is plenty of sunshine. I bought this kit directly from Goal Zero when the new Sherpa 50 first became available (for more than $100 more might I add). I have absolutely no regrets about buying this kit. I use the Nomad 13 solar panels daily to recharge my cellphone. I have a Samsung Galaxy S3, and set my phone out in the morning around 8 AM with around a 65% charge on my phone. By 11:30 AM my phone is close to fully charged. The solar panel even charges on cloudy days, although I usually get only a 90-95% charge. On absolutely rainy days, I use the Sherpa battery to charge my phone. I use approximately 20% of the battery to charge it from 50 to 100%. I have used the battery to recharge a 2nd gen iPad as well as power tool batteries (using the included 12V adapter). I can charge the iPad directly from the solar panels, but it took about 3/4 of the day, rotating the panels periodically. Considering it took me only ~4 hours to fully charge the Sherpa battery, it makes more sense to recharge the iPad directly from the battery than from the solar panel. Even though the new Sherpa is about 1/2 the weight of the old one, I would not recommend using this on casual hiking trips, as it still weighs more than 1 lb. with the solar panel plus the battery plus the inverter. For me, the whole point of hiking is to get way from everything, so I only take my phone for emergencies. I leave the tablet and other electronics behind. I use it on car camping trips and around the house, and couldn't be happier.

This combo does everything I hoped it would do. Very Impressive! So impressive that I purchased a second Nomad 13 solar panel to increase the wattage produced.
The Sherpa has tons of uses with the inverter attached. I was able to watch TV in my bedroom for about 4 (Four) hours before I got sleepy and tuned it off!
The combined panels took 2 (Two) seconds to figure-out and chain together to recharge the Sherpa 50. It charged in less than half the time that it took for ONE panel to charge it. Those 13 extra watts come in handy!

I bought this for a 2-week sailing trip. At first, it was fantastic; the power pack is incredibly versatile, and the solar panels worked great in direct sunlight. However, a few days into the trip the panels stopped charging via the cable that would feed the pack. It would produce power to the USB port directly. It didn't get wet, didn't get dropped, didn't get tugged...so I don't know what happened. In the end, that failure had a major impact on the trip...so maybe I just got a bad unit, but I wince at the thought of trusting one of these again. Not being able to charge GoPros, phones or digital camera batteries without spending an hour or two sitting by a power outlet on land wasn't the highlight of my trip.

We appreciate your review and feedback! This is the newest version of our Sherpa 50. Thanks to our great customers, we have made many improvements, including making the Sherpa 1/2 the size and 1/2 the weight of its predecessor. We hope you continue to enjoy your GOAL ZERO gear!!!
Thanks,

First of all, I love this thing. It works very well and for its size, it packs a lot of battery power. I also have the Goal Zero Escape 150. I wanted a smaller unit that I could take with me overseas and on adventures. I mainly wanted to power USB devices and some other things (camera battery chargers, etc...). The one big one was my MacBook Pro 15" Retina (85W power supply). While the inverter is capable of 100W, the combination of a Sherpa 50 + inverter only allows for up to 75W. Apparently, a Sherpa 100 is coming, which when used with the inverter will power up to 100W. I didnt know this until I was trying to charge my MBP on a flight and the battery 'failed' (the error message on the LCD). It charged for a few seconds, reset, charged for a few seconds, etc... My MBP has a 95WH battery, so I was hoping to get it back up to about 50%. Because it was just a bit underpowered, I wasnt able to charge my MBP. I am ordering a 60W power supply for my MBP, which I know will charge it if its not in use... I would have probably still bought this knowing that, but it was a bummer to learn the hard way. I would have given it 5 stars had I known in advance that the inverter + Sherpa 50 only gave me 75W of AC power. I understand trying to have consumer friendly messaging, but not having any solid specs kind of hurt me here...

I do love this thing - very very nice piece of kit. I'll definitely buy the Sherpa 100 when it becomes available too!
