I use the set of them, together with some one-inch blocks, to talk about time. One cubic inch as a year. A row of ten of them as 10 years, plus one or two more to equal the ages of the 6th graders. One of these 5x5x5 blocks then becomes 125 years and the 8 of them 1,000 years. We can then discuss the ancient world with a better comprehension of the time period involved, e.g., ancient Sumer or Egypt as 4,000 years, or 4 of the sets of 8 blocks. The Big Bang at 13.8 Billion years fills a room+.

The block are sturdy, smooth, and absolutely what I had been looking for.
