A swing and a miss for Seventh Generation, with these reformulated wipes. I just received my latest shipment, as part of my 1yr+ subscription. Was really surprised to see that the price went up (dramatically for me, because my Amazon Mom 20%-off deal just ended with this shipment), and the quality declined. I'm returning them, canceling my subscription, and switching to other wipes.

Previously the material in the wipes was a blend of polyester & rayon -- same stuff as in clothing. Now it's wood pulp blended with plastic resins (polypropelene and polyethylene). Feels like a wet paper towel. They're definitely not soft.

The top three ingredients in the previous wipes were: water, glycerin (a type of moisturizer), and citric acid (an alpha hydroxy acid, according to EWG's database). New ingredients: water, cocamidopropyl pg dimonium chloride phosphate (I've never heard of this before and EWG has no data), and sodium benzoate (a preservative). Why would I switch to a wipe that uses a chemical I've never heard of, and a preservative, too, before even listing something that would moisturize my baby's skin?

Neither of these changes strikes me as particularly "green" or "sustainable". That's greenwashing -- Seventh Generation is relying on their brandname to increase the price and cut quality, without losing sales. Too bad. I'm voting with my dollars against this reformulated wipe, and I'll be buying different wipes from now on.

****Revised June 28, 2013****:

Thanks Seventh Generation, for listening to your customers and bringing back the original baby wipes! I'm looking forward to giving them a good review.

In my dialog with the Seventh Generation rep.

Hi there-
This is Ashley from Seventh Gen. I wanted to let you know: the Original wipes are back! Check them out here:

http://www.amazon.com/Seventh-Generation-Clear-Wipes-count/dp/B0037W6NZO/ref=sr_1_16?s=baby-products&ie=UTF8&qid=1377281231&sr=1-16

We developed our new wipe because we heard from lots and lots of consumers who wanted to be able to clean more mess with each wipe - so we created a thicker, more moist wipe. But we didn't realize what a loyal following our original wipe had. It was a hard lesson to learn and we are truly thankful that you raised your voice and demanded we bring back the product you love. So now, we're pleased to offer both - the original wipe and the new thicker wipe.

Thank you for your patience and loyalty. Like you, we are committed to products that help us care for the next seven generations. As always, we appreciate your feedback and invite you to contact our customer service team with any additional comments (dgl@seventhgeneration.com).

Like a previous reviewer, I'm reposting this response from Seventh Generation - keep it going so other unhappy customers will have hope!

(Posted by Seventh Generation April 2nd, 2013)

Dear Valued Consumer:

We heard you loud and clear! Seventh Generation is bringing back our Original Baby Wipes so many of you have missed. And the best news is we haven't changed a thing.

The original wipe will be available in about 5 months. We're sorry it's going to take so long, but we have to start making them again which takes some time. They're likely to be available online first, but stay tuned and we will keep you updated!

Thank you for your feedback and loyalty. Like you, we are committed to products that help us care for the next seven generations.

Sincerely,

The Consumer Team

I've been using 7th Gen wipes for several years & am not happy with the new formula. They are rough feeling compared to the old ones and they are very sudsy and leave a sticky residue on my kiddos skin that after just a few uses has given him a terrible rash. I unfortunately was sent a case of these for my subscribe & save, had I known they'd be as awful as they are I would have sent them back to Amazon for a refund. I know some folks have complained that the old wipes were too thin and dry, but these are horrible in comparison. I've read the replies here on Amazon from the 7th Gen rep & I understand they were aiming for an improvement with this product, but they have failed miserably. I, like several other folks reviewing the product will be shopping for a different wipe.

Like many others, we were really surprised to discover that the seventh generation wipes we’ve been using for almost 3 years were changed so dramatically.

The wipes used to be made of a softer fabric that was gentle on the baby’s skin, wiping with no residue, with a terrific formulation that is genuinely free and clear. The new wipes are coarse and leave a foaming residue as you wipe.

The solution that the wipe is soaked in is still really solid, using a plant based soaping agent extracted from the soapbark tree along, along with some mild cleansers, moisturizers, and so on. Compared to ANY other baby wipe formulations you can choose from, even the kind labeled “sensitive,” these are still the best if you are concerned about what you use with your baby.

However, the additional coarseness seems to be the result of using wood pulp to build the fabric. While this might be a great move from a sustainability perspective, they are MUCH rougher than the previous wipes.

Pros:
+ Still far and away the best formulation from a health POV to use for your baby. Everything checks out from the extracts to the very simple preservatives that prevent micro growth in storage.
+ Shift to more sustainable materials

Neutral
- Foaming residue as you wipe. I imagine this effect was on purpose to make some people “feel” they are seeing a cleaning action. I don’t care for it.
- The wipe is MUCH thicker. Personally I enjoyed the thickness of the previous wipes, although perhaps there was a perception that thickness evoked perceptions of quality and performance with users.

Cons
- Much more coarse that the previous wipe. This is THE main issue. Not surprising though when you understand it uses wood pulp to build the fibers.
