There's a lot of comparisons between this and the cheaper 20mm f1.7 Lumix, and I while I have both, I'll list a few reason you why you want this lens instead of the Lumix (especially on the OM-D, or Olympus bodies).

1.) Much faster auto-focus. It's got to be more than several times faster, and rarely hunts. This makes it useable for quick, on-the-moment snapshots that you would never get with the Lumix. This is extraordinarily frustrating, as the camera gets in the way of your picture taking, instead of being a quick and easy instrument that just works. By far the primary reason for my purchase of the Olympus 17mm f1.8.

2.) Greatly reduced purple fringing (on Olympus bodies). Panasonic bodies will auto-correct for this, but if you're using an OM-D like me, this is a huge difference. Even with chromatic aberration correction in Adobe Lightroom 4, there's noticeable band of grey as the software removes the purple, particularly in the corners with the Lumix, where the fringing can be severe in certain situations. The Olympus 17mm f1.8 naturally works without creating excessive fringing.

3.) No more banding on the OM-D. The 20mm Lumix has a particularly nasty habit of creating horizontal or vertical bands that show up in the shadows, which becomes more and more visible the higher the ISO rises. I don't know who's fault it is that the issue exists, but changing to any other lens removes the problem. You would usually love using a large aperture lens in dim lighting, but not the Lumix/OM-D combo.

Those are the top reasons, but there's some (somewhat negligible) nitpicks notes that go either way.

Since getting this lens, it's pretty much all I ever want to use. I, too, have compared it with the Panasonic LUMIX G 20mm f/1.7 Aspherical Pancake Lens for Micro Four Thirds Interchangeable Lens Cameras. Having used both, the Olympus has the following going for it (from most to least important):

1. Rarely hunts and never for longer than a fraction of a second. The 20mm was quite prone to hunting in low light, and when it did, my camera was useless for seconds at a time.

2. Blazing AF speed. In addition to not hunting, the 17mm focuses extremely fast. The 20mm doesn't.

3. Silent focusing. The 17mm is a quiet little lens. Makes it good for video! The 20mm purrs all day and the noise, other than being distracting, could easily be felt in my right hand as I was holding the camera.

4. Excellent build quality. The 20mm has been recently updated to be all metal, but the 17mm was always metal to begin with.

5. Usable manual focus. It's still focus by wire, but it's as good as you're going to get on focus by wire. The fun manual focus ring makes it super swell for video shooting, although the AF is usable in video as well, thanks to the quiet focusing motor.

6. Completely internal focusing. Not a big deal, but it might be responsible for some of the above. Basically, it means that the front of the lens does not go in and out like the 20mm (and most lenses, really) does.

7. Reduced chromatic aberration. I really never perceived this to be a big deal since I was using a Panasonic body with the Panasonic 20mm, but it's good to know this is less of an issue with the Olympus.

Out of the box I was stunned by the immaculate build quality: precision fit 'n finish, ultra smooth moving parts and a solid reassuring feel. The brushed satin finish of the metal barrel is handsome and matches the top plate finish of my Olympus E-P3. Lens scales are engraved and filled with enamel, enhancing the vintage vibe of the optic. The metal barrel adds welcome heft to my ultra light E-P3. Unlike plastic pancakes, this optic makes the rig feel balanced and solid in hand. The extra heft helps me hold the rig steady when braced against my face.

FOCUS: Auto focus is fast, silent and surefooted. I couldn't be happier with performance. As a point of comparison, AF speed whips my Olympus 17 2.8 pancake black 'n blue. It's also faster than my Panasonic 14 2.5, although not as pronounced as the former. Unlike some other reviewers, I found the 17 1.8 excellent in low light, at least on my E-P3, and it nailed focus my other M4/3 lenses missed or were slow to lock.

Manual focus is easy and fast to use: pull MF ring toward the body and turn to focus. The manual focus ring is easy to grip, silky smooth and finely pitched, allowing precise adjustment. The precision of manual focus reminds me of old manual AIS Nikkors and is better than any AF lens I've owned. I found MF bothersome via LCD but a snap through the VF-2 EVF. The old school distance and DOF scales are a nice touch.

IMAGE QUALITY: Wide open at F1.8 it is extremely sharp in the center and slightly soft around the edges. Edge performance improves as you stop down. Color and contrast are well rendered. I love the bokeh at F1.8 or 2.0 but you have to carefully lock focus where you want it sharp, as DOF is razor thin. Performance is best from normal to infinity distances.
