Since getting this lens, it's pretty much all I ever want to use. I, too, have compared it with the Panasonic LUMIX G 20mm f/1.7 Aspherical Pancake Lens for Micro Four Thirds Interchangeable Lens Cameras. Having used both, the Olympus has the following going for it (from most to least important):
1. Rarely hunts and never for longer than a fraction of a second. The 20mm was quite prone to hunting in low light, and when it did, my camera was useless for seconds at a time.
2. Blazing AF speed. In addition to not hunting, the 17mm focuses extremely fast. The 20mm doesn't.
3. Silent focusing. The 17mm is a quiet little lens. Makes it good for video! The 20mm purrs all day and the noise, other than being distracting, could easily be felt in my right hand as I was holding the camera.
4. Excellent build quality. The 20mm has been recently updated to be all metal, but the 17mm was always metal to begin with.
5. Usable manual focus. It's still focus by wire, but it's as good as you're going to get on focus by wire. The fun manual focus ring makes it super swell for video shooting, although the AF is usable in video as well, thanks to the quiet focusing motor.
6. Completely internal focusing. Not a big deal, but it might be responsible for some of the above. Basically, it means that the front of the lens does not go in and out like the 20mm (and most lenses, really) does.
7. Reduced chromatic aberration. I really never perceived this to be a big deal since I was using a Panasonic body with the Panasonic 20mm, but it's good to know this is less of an issue with the Olympus.Read more ›
