Saw the mixed reviews on the previous model(UREC5), and this one is "updated", handles larger USB/SD cards; but had no reviews. I was wanting a rack moutable digital recorder/player and this seemd to fit the bill. Unit was packed well and arrived on time and undamaged. The user manual is breif, but ok. The controls are a bit quirky, but operate like they should(for the most part) once you get used to the interface. Popped in a SD card with some MP3s on it and it started playing in a couple of seconds. poped it out, put a USB thumb drive in, same thing, started up lpaying in a couple of sconds. Tried an external 20g USB HDD...unit does not supply enough power thru the USB to power the external HDD, so I connected the extra USB connection to a powerd USB hub, unit still would not play anything from the external HDD. OK...not a big issue, was planing on using SD cards with it for the most part anyway. Put an SD card in with WAV files on it...output was choppy, broken up and unusable, even tho the manual states it will lpay back MP3, WAV and WMA files. OK, still not a deal killer, was planning on sticking with MP3s anyway. then during playback of some MP3 music files, I tried adjusting the output volume via the front control. The left channel died. Wiggling the control brought the channel back, but attempts to adjust the volume caused the left channel to come and go. The feel of the conrol makes me think it's not soldered to the circuit board correctly inside the unit. Recording seemed to work well, altho it creates a WAV file named 001.WAV, 002.WAV, etc for each recording.
I have contacted Amazon about getting a return on the unit. If the seller wants to ship a new replacement and cover shipping both ways, I will try another unit to see if this is just a fluke; else I will request a refund.

I simply don't know where to begin... Where's the PRO in this?

I thought: -Well, how bad can it get in 2014?

Answer is: Worse!

This unit should be labeled as "Rackmounted Mp3 Player", because it's the only thing it actually does OK.

When reading all the fine descriptions on tpro.com they forget to mention a few things:
# It records in singlesided MONO (only from right input), no way to change that from user interface.
# The recordings sound absolutely horrible with USB-zippernoise and heavy autogain artifacts.
# It records in an obscure 4-bit AMI-ADPCM encoding in a .wav container.
# Only 32khz, not 44.1khz as they describe on the site. (minor issue tho)

I've also been in contact with the head of Technical Pro - and even tho he seems like a nice guy, I think he simply doesn't know how bad this unit is.

Recommend to remove this product from market alltogether until problems are solved.

Overall it's a great machine. One basic complaint is that it only records in a WAV format. It should give you the option of recording in MP3 or a WAV format. As a result you have to download a MP3 converter on your computer to convert the format. Just another avenue that you shouldn't have to do.

This product simply is not very good at doing what it is supposed to do, which is record from an outside source onto SD memory cards in reasonably good fidelity. Being a semi-pro at troubleshooting problems, I have extensively tried all the ways I know how to get it to record reasonably-well from my output sources to the UREC7 and I have had no luck. I wish I had saved the box so I could send it back, but I didn't so I have an expensive, non-working, addition to my system. Live and learn.

I'm using this right now to transfer our church's old Sunday messages from tape to digital. It's working very well for that. When I listen using the headphone jack as the tape is played and recorded, I hear some noise, but it's not present at all on the final recording, which is of excellent quality. Once I'm done with this project, we'll start using it on Sunday's to record the messages directly to digital.

I can't speak for the playback features, because I have not used them at all.

Works as advertised. It took me a while to get it to record correctly. You press the record button and hold it until the display says REC, the you press the record button again very quickly. If you press it too long the second time, it goes back to the default screen. Once you get hand of it, no problem. A nice digital recorder for the price.

Granted the one I received did not work, but I was so unimpressed by the build quality and the strangeness of the interface that I sent it back for a refund. I bought the Gemini DJ DRP-1 Digital Rack Mount Recorder instead which was more than twice as expensive, but well worth it for the quality of the build and the user interface.

Clunky interface - should be much easier to stop one recording and start another. Graphics are a lot of flashy lights with no really useful information about recording.

Very disappointing that it only records in wav files. The only reason I'm keeping it is that it's so cheap that it's not with the price of return postage.

Currently, I have it in my practice rig to record ideas, so its not a complete waste.

Slipped into a dj rig I can see it being good to cue up a few songs from a thumb drive for a bathroom break, but no self respecting dj I know would use it.

Bottom line: adequate playback, functional recorder, but waste of a full rack space.
