Helicon was the home of the Muses in Greek mythology, including Euterpe, the Muse of Music. It's exceptional for any singer to be admitted to the sacred grounds, especially a soprano age 23 born on the Island Sakhalin on the remotest fringe of Eurasia. But take two warnings, Ms Lezhneva: 1) Don't get lured into competition with Apollo; he never plays fair! 2) Watch out for Zeus; he's a notorious groper!

This is an astoundingly proficient performance for a debut recital CD! It would still be astounding if it were Julia Lezhneva's tenth recital recording. And it's not a cheapie! Lezhneva sings two of the most often-recorded masterworks of the 18th C; Vivaldi's motet "in furore iustissimae irae" and Mozart's motet "Exultate jubilate K165." The first demands mastery of florid passagi and the latter requires every skill a baroque singer could have. Between those two monumental works, Lezhneva reveals her gorgeously balanced timbre way up to coloratura without a tic of harshness in a lesser-known motet with instruments by Handel - Seaviat tellus inter rigores - and a solo moet by Nicola Porpora, In caelo stelle clare. Lezhneva has the confidence of a Wunderkind, and her confidence is justified. I haven't caught a single ill-tuned note while listening to the whole CD twice. The notes rave about Lezhneva's "youthful" voice; for once the notes are correct. Lezhneva's voice is a fresh as dew on a primrose. It would sound beautiful even if she lacked full technical control of it, but her technical control is impeccable. Her embellishments, on these works that some singer treat merely as templates for embellishment, are innocently simple yet she makes them eloquent. She has a trill that would be the envy of a nightingale or a Dutch recorder virtuoso.

Julia Lezhneva's performance of Handel's "O Nox Dulce" is meltingly beautiful. "Divine" is the word that immediately comes to mind. Her enthusiasm for singing--easily visible on the youtube videos of her live performances, interviews, and the recording session of this piece--shines through in every note.

This is a wonderful offering from an up and coming star who shows a maturity and technique that belies her years.
We can expect much more from her in the future.

A slight quibble, as she is still so young and likely to become more nuanced, let's cut her some slack-but there is a bit of a sameness to her sound in all of these pieces that is just ever-so-slightly wearing. Still, her voice is so ravishing, and she produces her tones so effortlessly, this still deserves 5 stars. Perhaps the repertoire is a bit too much of a good thing, with too much major tonality-one longs to hear her in some darkly colored arias. The accompanists are wonderful, but the recording lacks a bit of air and sense of space,

As glorious as a voice can be...

I came across Ms. Lezhneva by accident while looking up some information on a classical music piece on YouTube. I've recently elected to foray into classical music (my usual appetite principally revolving around the alternative music umbrella and classic rock) and when I first heard her in some video I was simply blown away.

I've read some reviews which proclaim her voice is like that of an angel and I couldn't agree more. I'm not prone to sudden, uncontrollable emotions, but this CD is so beautiful it has more than once (in the two weeks I've owned it) brought a tear to my eye. I didn't know a voice could be like this.

Buy it. Just do it.
