Pros:
-Works on my Toshiba S50 (with very slight modification).
-No problems with connectivity and works as expected.
-HDD activity LED

Cons: I personally have zero problems with the caddy itself (I love it) but some people might find the following troublesome...
-Lack of proper instructions and OEM-like packaging.
-Installation requires a thin precision screwdriver.
-Some models may need very very slight modding (like mine; see below).
-Drives on it are not boot-able (see below)
-"Slow" (again, see below)

You'll see a lot of reviews of this caddy (Silverstone and other brands) in which people complain that the drives on it are slow and cannot be booted from.

-For starters, any drive on this caddy will only run on SATA revision 1 - 1.5 Gbit/s. I repeat, ***ONLY SATA rev. 1!!!*** This is a huge bottleneck for all SSDs and should not be used on such drives. Why only SATA 1 - 1.5 Gbit/s? It's because the port on your laptop's ODD was designed to, you know, run optical drives. SATA 3 will be unnecessary for such drives.

-The reason why it can't be booted from is that most laptop BIOS only recognize the ODD port specifically just for optical drives. Instead of displaying the secondary drive on my BIOS, it simply said "ODD - Not Present" (tested both FAT32 and NTFS drives). This may not apply to laptops with unlocked BIOS. This isn't a major downside as you should only use this caddy for secondary drives.Read more ›

I bought it for my Dell XPS 15z. A Seagate 1TB SS Hybrid drive fits perfectly, and the tray itself fits in the space inside the laptop, but pay attention to your mounting tab locations. The mounting tabs on this tray are essentially on the front and back, while the screw holes in my laptop are on the sides. It fits so nice, rather than sending it back, I decided to make it work with some double sided sticky tape, and conductive foam, so I'm happy with the result. This is just a heads up to look closely at the pictures, and note the location of your mounting tabs, before you order.

I purchased this SATA HDD slim optical bay caddy to upgrade my MSI X460DX (great laptop btw) with an SSD and replace my DVD drive with the removed HDD.

Yes, this is a plastic caddy as opposed to the partially metal ones you can get from other "generic" sources, but I chose this one for a couple reasons that made this product the right choice:
* I recognize Silverstone as a quality manufacturer of other computer case products.
* The open design allows you to attach the HDD to the caddy with the included screws. Some just rely on friction to hold the drive in place, a choice I wasn't comfortable with.
* If you look at the close-up pictures, there are holes in the back that some caddies do not include. I was able to attach a necessary bracket to the left-most hole in order to secure the caddy inside my laptop. The hole is not threaded, but with an appropriate amount of force, the screw from the laptop threaded itself in tightly. Be sure to remove your optical drive from your laptop before choosing a caddy to ensure compatibility.
* The front of the caddy includes (standard?) holes for clipping a drive cover to the caddy. This worked perfect for the cover from my optical drive; after the conversion was complete, you can't tell that it's been swapped from the outside. I had to slightly modify the cover using an x-acto knife to account for the additional screw mounts on the front (maybe a different standard for cover?).
* Plastic is lightweight, and since this is completely enclosed inside the laptop, that makes total sense.

Other thoughts:

Has LEDs for power and disk activity, nice touch I suppose.

I replaced the HD in my Toshiba P55t-A5202 with an SSD drive, and used this caddy to put the Toshiba's 750GB HD in place of the DVD drive as a second HD for storage. It was very easy to install and works perfectly. A minor irritation....the HD light on the caddy is very bright and on all the time. A small price to pay to have a second drive in my laptop.

How often does anyone actually use an optical drive anymore? I remember when they were incredibly high tech and a cd was a meaningful chunk of your hard drive, but not anymore. Pull out your dvd or blu ray drive, put it in an external caddy for when you need it and double your storage space. Works on slot loading macs too.
