This was my second effort at ordering hiking boots from Amazon. I missed the size on the first effort but the return was so easy that I decided to try one more time. Searching through all of the boots available I stumbled across this Vasque and was shocked to find a narrow size (hard to find) for my low volume foot. All of the other specs were exactly what I was looking for and I am especially happy with the metal eyelets and the speed lacing opportunity. I am an older man who is getting back on the AT after many years off so I spent many weeks of research, both online and in the stores, and am convinced that Vasque is among the best and, of course, the Amazon price was already great and they were giving another 25% off at the time.

The shoes were comfortable straight out of the box especially with my omni wool socks. Note the absence of loops on the heel. The tongue opens up so much that your foot steps right in with no friction to mess with your socks so there is no need for the loops. Have been wearing the boots everywhere for the last few days and expect to put 20 miles in on the AT real soon. I am amazed at the comfort and especially the quality of the work. Zoom in on the pictures and that is exactly the way the stitching and other details look. The upper area is soft around the ankle yet the sole is rugged (a little stiff) and should do well for heavy backpacking. Clearly a lot of effort in the cleat design and concern for traction.

With only 2 previous comments, I was concerned but optimistic while waiting for delivery. I can say that this is the first shoes of any kind that I have ever owned that I am truly excited about. If for any reason they do not meet my expectations I will update this review in a couple of weeks. See you on the trail.

(Update Below) I'll start off by saying that writing a boot review that focuses on fit is almost impossible. Every foot is different and high-end boot manufacturers all have components that are unique to them. If at all possible, any pair of boots bought online need to be tried on in advance unless you're super confident of the brand and the return policy is solid. And in the case of Amazon, I'd say the return policy is rock solid.

I'm a pretty serious hiker and backpacker and have worn many brands in the past. For the past four years or so I'd moved exclusively to AKU which is a Romanian based company. I'd also exclusively worn mixed material hikers and boots. These were my first pair of all leather boots because, living in a warmer environment, I'd always been a bit reluctant due to the lack of breathability. But I'm glad to say I've had NO problem with the St. Elias' being too hot on my feet.

While I wouldn't recommend these if someone is exclusively doing day hikes with a light pack I also wouldn't say it would be a bad decision. These boots seem to deliver what you want from them in accordance with the terrain. Given the soft leather the break in time was minimal (for me it was about 20 trail miles) and while the TPU shank gives super solid underfoot protection there's enough flexibility to provide for agility. The EVA midsole delivers great comfort and the lacing system is right on the money. Although I will say that unless the top eyelet is tied snuggly I have heard a little "squeaking." It's not a problem for me as I like to tie my boots tightly around the ankle.

Note: Whenever I read reviews saying "buy up in size" I typically take it with a grain of salt and buy what I typically wear. Not so in this case. The "normal" size is very narrow.

I ordered these boots shortly before a climb of Kilimanjaro. I had no time to break them in. I am a size 11.5 but I ordered 12 to allow a margin of error and to accommodate thick socks. The boots performed extremely well - the waterproofing worked through small streams, heavy rains (no gaiters) and snow. I found them very comfortable and warm yet also well ventilated. After a total of 73km with lots of rocks, scree, coarse foliage and tree branches, they are in excellent condition (see photos) and cleaned up easily. I had no blisters whatsoever after 5 days of hiking.
I really appreciated the ease of putting them on in the "lobby" of my small tent where I had to stoop before exiting into the cold - the lacing system affords a pliant opening when loosened halfway. If I had to find something wrong, there were times when they seemed a bit stiff and heavy but that may be the price of solid materials and high functioning.

The Vasque St. Elias GTX is a great boot. It is a very sturdy and solid hiking boot - definitely not a gym shoe type feel. It is comfortable right out of the box and has a good snug fit at the ankles. Not a light weight boot but not as heavy as Danner Lights or others of that type. When ordering, I took the advise of several reviewers and ordered a half size down and got size 10W. This was a mistake. I could get the boot on easily but my toes were bunched together. (These have a tapered toe box which make them narrow at the toes.) I sent it back and exchanged for my normal size 10.5W and that was also too tight. I sent those back and got size 11W and they fit perfectly. (Gotta love Amazon's easy-simple return policy!) It must be all that Gore-Tex padding in there taking up room and the narrow toe box. With the size 11W I have room to wiggle my toes. Don't hesitate. Buy these boots but get a half size bigger than your normal size. Add a Super Feet insole and you will love them.
