I bought this unit because the place that I would visit once in awhile, decided to take it out on everyone and lock up the outdoor receptacles. Could not even vacuum your car out anymore. That and needing to get some body work done on my car, I decided to have a portable inverter unit that I could use a grinder or sander or drill, when I wanted too. Soemthing to use off of a 12 volt car battery. I bought this unit and it is a very good unit. It has Max power that is needed on a grinder on startup? Does not even hesitate to wind right up with this inverter. Some inverters reset when that happens and sometimes you have to wait. This one, held it greatly. When I was really using it steady with hard work, all of a sudden the power shut off. I checked it out and found out that there is a heat limiter in there. Gets to hot, it shuts off for a few minutes before it ruins your day with a fire or frying your battery. I love this thing and highly recommend it for the do it yourselfer. These are also good for running computers, extra lights, etc. The nice thing about it also, is there is a control inside that will shut off the electricity, if your car/truck battery gets to low, in order to save the battery. VERY NICE!
UPDATE: 5-14-15, I have used this inverter many times since I bought it and for long durations and other than one of the receptacles popping out and I had to glue it into place, this unit still runs great. Even after dropping it 3 times, it still works GREAT. Just pick a spot to do some work on the car, jump out, raise the hood, put the clamps on the battery posts, look at the voltage display on the inverter and plug in my sander, drill, even my pony compressor and I can mess with my car all day. Of course you have to start your car once in awhile to be sure it is charged up. Very glad I bought it!! Truly am!!

Are you in the military? This thing is your new best friend. I'm an Army medic and whether I'm deployed or in a field environment back in garrison, I NEED this device when I'm stuck ina vehicle. I've hooked it to 12v and 24v systems (attached to only one battery) in multiple tactical vehicles and commercial vehicles and it's great. Next week I have to sit out in a field litter ambulance all day with no air conditioner in 100+ degree weather but I'm ok because this thing can run a small fan that I've mounted to the ceiling and a portable beverage cooler as well as being able to keep my tablet charged for those times when nothing is happening.

The device is durrable and it has a low-battery shutoff feature that makes me confident that I won't accidently kill the battery when I forget to run the engine from time to time. If the mission changes and I have to jump into a government van, it takes less than a minute to switch out the battery cables with a cigarette lighter adapter.

I also just finished my degree in Disaster and Emergency Management and I can say that this device could be a life-saver. During major disasters like Katrina and Sandy, many people were caught without power and for most, no power means no communications, no cold water, and no medical devices that run off electricity. Portable generators are expensive and the carbon monoxide killed more people in the aftermath of Sandy than any other cause. Having a power inverter for your car that has enough wattage to run your essentials can save your life. I've tried other inverters and I trust this one to get the job done.

great product. Remember that you only get 100 watts from the cigarette lighter adapter and 500 watts from the battery cables. All in all the unit is a great buy if you need electricity from your automobile or 12 volt source. The maximum amperage that the device will use while on battery terminal cables is about 54 amps. Great buy

We (myself and my contractor brother) tested this product, and found it to be a pretty good device for powering up cell phones, computers, and such, but not so great with power tools, even though it is advertised to be able to handle them. After noticing that the power obviously waned when using a Dremel tool, this device was hooked up to a voltage meter. Even though it is stated that it gives 120 volts, it was shown to actually be giving the Dremel 112 volts...important because it increases the wear and tear on the motor.

At 500 watts, this should have been able to handle a grinder, but it overcharged and shut down, presenting other problems. There is no reset instructions in the materials that came with the device, and no reset button....just have to wait til such time that it will cut back on. There is also no "ready" button which would be helpful to indicate when the inverter has "warmed up," in addition to the "on" button. Also, it would make sense to have an "on/off" button.

Other problems that were noted:

1. Instructions not clear in many places, and out of sequence, causing someone to have to read everything in total before using safely...which many people don't really want to do. A quick start guide would be nice, and a clearer troubleshooting guide.

2. Cables seem short and could be longer.

Positive: no problem at all with a cell phone, a computer, and a Kindle. Very handy to have when away from home. This is obviously a well-made, sturdy piece of equipment.

To summarize, it appears that this device with this voltage (500 watts) is not the best for motors "that spin" but is fine for passive devices such as cells, Kindles, ipods, etc. An inverter to use power tools in a remote location is a needed item, and this disappointed in that respect, although it should have been able to handle the work...a higher voltage inverter would be advised for power tools.
