This is one of the most exciting new voices I've heard in a long time. Dinara Alieva's soprano is rich, warm, vibrant and strikingly beautiful, highly individual, immaculately focused, immediately recognizable. She may be the best of the newer sopranos from the former Soviet Union. The opening Rachmaninoff Vocalise is among the most alluring I have heard, and she makes each selection her own straight through to Tatiana's familiar Letter Scene here brought to palpitating, idiomatic life. She sings with glorious legato and complete assurance. Well balanced throughout the range, her lower voice is particularly strong, with an almost golden-age weight and color, and she uses it, without fear but never without taste, to create real characters in this recital of well known Russian arias (and a few songs with orchestral accompaniment). She is a fine, vivid vocal actress. Able to lighten the tone at will and then expand to exciting, vibrant full voice with a distinctive Slavic timbre and a large, exciting, beautifully placed top and considerable agility, Alieva is in full command of a pure, unblemished instrument. She shows herself here an ideal interpreter in this repertoire and an excellent musician. I look forward to hearing much more of her. The recital is well recorded, with fine, characterful playing from the New Russia State Symphony Orchestra--they actually allow themselves to sound Russian in an enjoyably old-fashioned way under the baton of Dmitry Yablonsky, who clearly understands that he has a particularly glorious artist to support and does so with passion and strength and inspiration. Highest recommendation.

I have heard the extraordinary Dinara Alieva most recently in Vienna where she sang the role of Tatiana in Tchaikovsky's Eugene Onegin. Her partners at the Vienna Statsoper were the charismatic superstar, Rolando Villazon and the great Polish baritone, Marius Kwiecen. I must say that I have rarely heard a more glorious, genuine and sincere portrayal of the role of Tatiana. Alieva's singing and acting, not to mention her classic beauty, charm and grace make this first CD of hers something that collectors should have. I am sure we'll be seeing Ms. Alieva singing these emotionally charged, gorgeous arias in the great opera houses of the world.

THIS is as good as it would get for Grand Russian Arias as Dinara Alieva delivers a powerful interpretation of the Russian Classics (this is comparable to the performances of legendary Tamara Sinyavskaya aka the Soul Of The Bolshoi).

ONE observation I have made on Ms. Alieva's Art is that similar to Maria Callas she is a Musician first and Singer second (Similar to Maria Callas she is a Superb Concert Pianist, something that is a very rare commodity nowadays) and that explains the intensity, the technique and the power of her Singing.

I Have Picked Dinara Alieva As The Next Grand Diva As She Is Just Starting To Get Noticed Internationally.

It has been a good while since I heard a new voice as beautiful and promising as this one. Alieva's rich soprano is typically Slavonic but without the dreaded wobble which used previously and too often to characterise such voices. Her security of vocalisation runs the risk of making everything she does sound too easy - an effect not mitigated by the rather placid orchestral accompaniments, hence although, for example, Tatyana's Letter Scene is gorgeously sung it lacks the drama and tension which can perhaps be reasonably expected only from a live performance or from a more experienced and temperamental artist.

However, apart from some slight lack of individuality in colour and characterisation this is a virtually perfect voice and one may simply lie back and luxuriate in its quality. It is even throughout its range, with a splendid top, a properly developed lower register, a trill and seamless legato. I am baffled by a previous reviewer's complaint regarding her intonation; to my experienced ears it is spot-on and I suspect that this supposed deficiency is the result perception of subjective taste rather than an objective fact, especially as her vibrato is textbook correct in its amplitude and oscillation.

The programme suits her sound ideally: one or two arias conclude rather abruptly but that's a minor observation; for the most part her burnished, mezzo-ish timbre is ideally suited to plangent Russian melancholy. Her smoky voice is reminiscent of Galina Gorchakova in her prime and evidently capable of further development into heavier roles, being so firmly anchored in the lower register. Let us hope that Alieva avoids the route Netrebko has latterly taken and manages her vocal development more wisely.

I was expecting to get beautiful arias... instead it was very harsh, unpleasant music. If that's what the Russians like, they can keep it.
