We have a lot of Playdoh sets, from the kids' favorite Breakfast Time Set to the dastardly-messy Octopus Playset, but this is easily the worst. With the increasingly complicated Playdoh systems of the past couple years, the problem for Playskool has been how to make the smaller pieces and presses work with the classic Playdoh recipe.

The solution is Playdoh Plus, a purple-canned, softer version of Playdoh, of which there are three cans included with this set. And that would be fine except the set also include two cans of regular Playdoh because the molds (purportedly) work better with Playdoh Plus and the presses with regular Playdoh. But you oughtn't mix them or the resulting mixture will be good for neither. Anyone with kids can already see where this is going to be a problem.

So when my otherwise-carefree 3yo and rules-ignoring 6yo played with the set I had to explain they shouldn't mix the two consistencies, and within 5 minutes (and here I'm being generous; I'm sure it happened earlier and that's when they worked up the courage to tell me) the deed was done. Exactly which children did Playskool think wouldn't mix the doughs? None I've met. The very need for rules-of-use on a creative toy is supremely stupid; Playskool's expectation that kids will follow them during right-brain playtime is corporate foolishness.

Our daughters received this as a gift; it's one of many Play-Doh sets we have. The main attraction is an extruder that pumps out ice cream into a spinning cone - voila! TV-commercial worthy play-doh ice cream cone!

The problem is the key feature is that you can make twist cones, by which I mean, you can mix approximately two jars of play-doh plus together and make about two twist cones. Now the play-doh is mixed together and basically useless. This amounts to about 90 seconds of fun per two jars of play-doh. The set comes with three jars. I'm sure this is a big money-maker for the manufacturer as the parents of disappointed children buy more play-doh to waste on this ridiculous thing. Even as a gift it would have cost us a ton if I didn't throw it away after that supremely annoying 90 seconds was over.

My daughter loves to play with Play-doh products and has been asking for the Play-Doh Perfect Twist Ice Cream maker for a while now. I finally gave in and got it for her because she's almost 5 and was hoping that she would be able to use the ice cream maker without adult assistance. The age on the box says age 3 and up but to be honest I highly doubt many 3 year olds are going to be able to play with this. They don't have the motor skills, patience or strength needed.

Here are my cons for this toy:
~ Difficult to use the sprinkle maker. It's flimsy and requires a fair amount of pressure to work
~ When you push down level the ice cream shoots out while the ice cream cone swirls. We basically ended up with a huge mess.
~The cone holder is nearly impossible to get the cones out of without taking it off the machine. Our went flying more than once when trying to get a cone out.
~The little impressions are extremely hard to get the dough out of and still have the shape or impression intact.

Here are my pros:
~ It does encourage imagination
~ It does help fine tune their motor skills
~ Problem solving comes in to play
~Promotes creativity

I would say this toy is more for a 6+ age group. My daughter will be 5 in a couple months and she can play with the perfect twist ice cream maker however it requires a fair amount of assistance from me or another adult. She did enjoy playing with it but I could tell she was getting frustrated having to ask me for help every few minutes. She eventually gave up playing with the perfect twist ice cream maker and just played with the cones, ice cream cups and play-doh. If I had to do this over I would not buy it again for her. She's just not ready for it.

Vine Customer Review of Free Product ( What's this? )
I always wanted something like when I was a kid. I was lucky to get play-doh, the real stuff, but was usually stuck with flour and food coloring.

However, this toy is pretty darn awesome. It comes with five different colors -- all brightly colored to mimic what ice cream I guess looks like when you get it from an ice cream parlor.

It is highly durable. My 3 year old and 9 year old have wrestled with it for a few weeks now and it hasn't broke. The pieces aren't even loose.

It was easy to assemble, with much of it already assembled.

It is easy to operate with no learning curve or instructions needed. Maybe my 3 year old is exceptional, and what parent doesn't like to think that way, but she doesn't really need oversight on this. It is a great toy, with not a lot of small parts, or tough maneuvers to figure out.

As far as clean-up, my wife usually mutters "I hate play-doh" about once a day, but that is play-doh and it is also a sign of how often my children play with the toy.

Yes, a highly-recommended toy.
