Format: Audio CD
With 2011's A Winter Tale, Bobby Long showed up on the national scene with a solid, unassuming, folky debut record. He toured pretty constantly with a great band and by himself in the two years since, and it's clear that the time he spent with a band of his own shaped the process for his new record. Here, he lets the band do more of the heavy lifting, relying less on overly verbose lyrical phrases and bluesy vocal vamping. Those tricks worked fine for him previously, but as he grows in his abilities and improves the way he makes records, he doesn't need the showy singer-songerwriter smoke and mirrors. On Wishbone, he employs his best melodies, most diverse instrumentation and cleanest production yet, and the final result is a serious improvement. I have to mention one song in particular: "To The Light" is unlike anything else in Long's catalog and it's an impressive achievement for him. With calm, assured verses, it feels like another solid track...and then it breaks open with a pounding instrumental and one of Long's clearest and most memorable hooks soaring on top. It's clear Long set out to make a different record this time out (think more Young than Dylan), and there is no doubt whatsoever that he's made his best, most consistent and most surprising work with Wishbone.

Just saw him in person and believe me this young man has talent! As a new fan, I've just purchased all three of his albums. I am loving every minute of it. Reminds me a lot of Neil Young, Bob Dylan but even better!
