After a few months, the original cable that came with my iPad began charging only intermittently, which I traced to there being some internal damage to the wires as they entered the plug. I reinforced that area, and was able to use the cable a couple months longer, but it ultimately failed to charge at all.

Since the point of failure was the cable as it connected to the plug, it seemed logical to search for a cable which eliminated that stress point, and this cable is it. Since the connection is at a right angle, there is virtually no bending or tugging on the connection to the plug. Additionally, this cable is thicker than the original, with a more robust feel to it, which should even further increase its longevity, and it is solidly seated, with no wiggling out of place. There's also no problem using it with my clear case back panel.

I was a bit unclear as to the orientation of the angle in the product description, so I hope this will be of some help. I nearly always use my iPad in landscape mode, with the home button on the left, camera on right. In this orientation, the cable runs downward from the plug. If you prefer to use your iPad differently, the same cable is available with the opposite angle.

I can't recommend this cable highly enough, I've used it for a few weeks now, and have found no fault whatsoever.

Note: This cable is for iPads and iPhones without the new lightning connector (e.g., iPad 3 and earlier).

This is far and away my favorite iPad cable, and I've gone through a number of them. I use my iPad a lot for lap-based activities (drawing, making music, reading), which means that if the iPad needs to be plugged in while I'm using it the cable gets in the way -- and gets damaged by being folded up against the bottom of the iPad. I'm on my third iPad, and each and every one of them has outlived its cable because of this.

First of all, the StarTech cable is heavier, thicker and stiffer than any other cable I've found. This means it doesn't loop up quite so nicely as the standard Apple cable ... but it's also much more resistant to getting kinked and breaking. That's a big deal, and I'm delighted with it.

Second, the way the cable attaches to the iPad at an angle means it is much less likely to get crimped just by sitting in my lap. That's brilliant! You even get your choice of which direction you want the cable to go -- this one angles left (i.e., toward the side of the iPad where the smart cover attaches); StarTech also sells one that angles right (toward the side of the iPad where the volume buttons are). I'm guessing that if you're left-handed you might find the right-angle handier, and vice versa if you're right-handed. There's also a StarTech cable that comes straight out the bottom, more like the Apple cable, if that works better for you -- in which case, what you're paying for here is the sturdiness of the cable, not the angle.

Also, the cable is nice and long (six feet long), which wasn't a major factor in why I bought it but which sure is nice now that I have it.

So ... I've only had this cable for a few weeks, so can't really speak to how long-lasting it is, but so far it has stood up to all kinds of hard use and has been absolutely reliable and wonderful to use. I highly recommend it.

Nice thick cable, lifetime warranty, these are the ones. Been looking for some time for decent and well-made, but not expensive, charging cables. I got the typical ones that have the cord coming out the bottom, but they come with a bunch of different orientations. They have one with the cable coming out the back, or the left side, or the right side. That's pretty handy. I might get one with a left or right side for use on the treadmill.

Make sure you get them directly from Amazon.com tho. Before I got this one, I ordered a Startech cable from a third-party seller and got some cheap counterfeit crap that broke almost immediately. It wasn't even in the proper box, but I didn't realize that until I got this one. It was wrapped very tightly and almost at right angles inside the box, so it's no wonder it stopped working.

And the seller didn't want to take it back, so I had to have Amazon intervene (which of course they did, thank you Amazon) and I'm gonna take that refund money and buy another one of these. :-)

Did I mention lifetime warranty? Stop looking. These are the ones you want.

I purchased this cable because I have had two iSmooth cables fail on me over the past 6 months (wires came loose at the 30 pin connector, and yes, I am pulling from the plastic part, not by the wire). Got tired of this, so I upgraded to this StarTech cable. I needed this cable to be at least 6 ft long so I could use my iPhone while sitting up in bed. The left angle wire exit is a plus because you can use your iPhone long ways and the cable points down towards the floor, not straight out like traditional cables. This makes it feel better and natural holding it in your hands.

Tip: If you sleep on the right side (passenger side) of the bed, you will want to order a left angle model. If you sleep on the left side (driver side) of the bed, you will want to order a right angle model.

First impressions:

-Packaged nicely and protected
-This cable has genuine iPhone cable flexibility, and is thicker that the original iPhone cable
-The USB plastic cable end is well made and thicker that most
-The 30 pin plastic cable end fits into the iPhone nice and tight like the original iPhone cable
-You can tell that this cable is 100% better than any other cables I have purchased in the past
-The 6.5 ft length is a plus
-The price is a little steep ($20), but you get a much better cable, and a Lifetime Warranty

I would highly recommend this StarTech cable, and only time will tell how long this cable will last!
